Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Southgate III on Sat 18 May 2013 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn Winning Draw 4pts

Match report A superb innings of 162 from James Munro helped Old Actonians 3rd Xi to a winning draw against Southgate.

Having lost the toss and been put in, the Axemen crumbled to 40/5 before a stand off 188 for the 6 wicket took Old A's 228. Whilst the majority of the runs in this partnership fell to James Munro who scored a career best 162, credit must be given to Andy Spinks who batted superbly and supported both James and the team with a well paced and disciplined 41. The A's had got off to a promising start with both Matt Robinson and Jon Hawkins playing some great shots. However, a batting collapse followed which left the Axemen at 40/5.

At this point James Munro decided to take things into his own hands as he demolished the Southgate bowling with 14 4's and 11 6s. It was a tremendous innings and despite him being dropped on 99 an innings of genuine class, which put away any ball which was just a fraction short or wide. After Munro departed, the remainder of the OA's tail added a few quick runs before captain Steve Smith decided to declare.

The A's started well with Kier Smith removing Clark for a duck after the opener went after a good delivery just outside his off stump. Unfortunately for Clark, he failed to time the shot and edged straight behind to Spinks. Lassman and Rea rebuilt the innings until Kier Smith bowled Rea. At this Point there were a number of chances but Geale rode his luck for a short while before bowler by Kier Smith for 6.

Kier's namesake Steve Smith joined the wickets at this point by removing Davis for 2 after a good catch by Hawkins. Both Smiths bowled well in tandem and were unlucky not to add to their hauls, when both bowled a good line outside the off stump.

However it was when Steve Smith took himself off that the axemen stuck. Grant who replaced Smith at the Glaxo end, fired in a quicker delivery which Carter had no answer to and he looped a catch to Munro who had been fielding at the 45 degrees to the one position.

Despite good bowling from the Old A's bowlers the Southgate batmsen batted well until Robson was Removed by Kier Smith to complete his fifther. At this point Smith turned to the bowling of Munro who dispatched the opener Lassman and the number 10 Desa, but by this time it was too late and Southgate held out for a draw.

All in all it was a great game of cricket played in the right spirit and a great result for the Axemen against what will probably prove to be one of the better sides in the division.
