Match report 9am start? Not really our thing, far too early for cricket. Or so we thought. The pleasure of playing on a perfect Hampstead pitch on a fresh summer morning soon woke us up. A good toss to lose, it turned out. Marilyn Smith and Keely Juster opened the batting, and set off at a brisk pace. Marilyn was out lbw for 10 with the score on 30 in the 6th over. Katie Davies came in, and soon showed her form, crashing the ball across the smooth outfield. The appearance of the Hampstead president (Carson from Downton Abbey) may have distracted those waiting to bat, but did not affect Keely and Katie, who racked up the runs. Katie was run out for 66 in the 21st over, a welcome return to form. There was no respite for Hampstead. Kelsey Toner picked up where Katie left off, smacking that ball over the field. At the other end, Keely continued accumulating runs with elegant cover drives along the ground. The fielders didn’t know what to do. The 200 came up in the 28th over, closely followed by Keely’s maiden ton for Old A’s. Keely finished on 102 not out, and Kelsey on 29 not out. Old Actonian’s 218 for 2. Best ever score. With a 9am start!
It was always going to be hard for Hampstead, with a run rate of 7 an over. Tight bowling by Ellie Bourne and Kelsey Toner killed any chance they had of winning the game. They had 24 off 8 overs, well below the run rate. Marilyn Smith came on to bowl, and took 3 for 25. They had no idea how to play the spin of Preeti Kate, and wickets began to tumble. The pressure of the run chase resulted in run outs by Lucy Davies and Marilyn Smith. Lucy also took a wicket. Edna Moses, Salma Virk and Reshma Garrera also bowled well, and Katy O’Sullivan starred in the field. A special mention goes to Katie Davies for her exceptional keeping, after batting for 20 overs.
Hampstead could only make 113 for 7. Our first ever victory over Hampstead, and it was crushing. Excellent game ladies – maybe we should start at 9am more often. Joking.
