Perivale Phoenicians 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 02 Jul 2016 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 1 wicket
Match report
After last weeks shoeing by the league leaders the 3s found themselves in the bottom 2 making this a 20 pointer basement clash. Just the 8 changes this week (which at least partly explains our batting inconsistencies) but Nathan called correctly and inserted the oppo who had 6 players at the start time! Nathan allowed a bit of extra time to allow their numbers to swell and we were raring to go. Great to have Kier back to take the new cherry with the skipper "steaming" in from the other with his customary stutter. Kier soon removed one opener and Nathan backed this up with 2 of his own to leave Perivale in a spot of early bother. Their number 4 came in and played a wild swish at his first delivery which went for a boundary over the slips. It did not suggest longevity at the crease but he started striking the ball sweetly and got better as his innings progressed. Meanwhile at the other end there was little support for him as the other Smith came on to wreak havoc at his lucky ground (took a 7 for v Osterley here last season). Nathan kept threatening to take him off but he kept taking wickets so an 11 over spell ensued which returned figures of 6 for 36. Their number 4 scored a remarkable 92 out of their total of 138 until he was bowled by the returning Nathan to finish the innings. The bowler he found hardest to score off was Tim Wallace who bowled with good control in his spell.
So we had 56 overs to reach our target on a pitch that had no real demons but was certainly not the easiest to score quickly on. Richard Parker and Andrew Jones opened up and a mix up at the end of the 2nd over resulted in Richard departing the scene. On a positive note I think he did break the world record for kicking a helmet the furthest! Andrew soon followed which left us 1 for 2. Not where you want to be in a must win game. However we had Rob Long and Ali Slaughter at the crease and they steadied the ship. Perivale then brought on a spinner who got prodigious turn and snapped up Ali and Tim in his first over to leave us 40 for 4. John Hawkins did not last too long either and at 51 for 5 we were staring down the barrel. The skipper then promoted Asad to 7 and this proved a shrewd move. He provided valuable support to Rob in a partnership of 59 and when he was out, we had got ourselves back in it with 29 now needed. Nathan was next in but was cleaned up by their opening bowler who ended up bowling 20 overs! The VC was next in on a pitch that was not condusive to a nurdle. However I did stick around and saw Rob through to a well deserved 50. It was not pretty by his own admission but it was the sort of innings we had lacked in recent weeks by one of our top order. With 9 still needed Rob spooned one to mid wicket off the spinner and Kier came out to join me. He soon earned himself "d*** of the day" when he covered the stumps with his legs when taking guard! One run later I was adjudged LBW and we were now relying on the 2 Smiths to see us over the line. Kier got a lovely nick between keeper and slip to make it 4 to win. 2 overs later he creamed a cover drive which brought him 3. A slog sweep off the spinner in the next over saw us home it was a very nervy affair. The oppo appealed for LBW all the time as their spinner (who turned the ball a lot) felt every ball he bowled would have hit the stumps! 3 LBWs were given however which reflects what a decent bunch we are!
A much needed win then for the 3s as we head into the 2nd half of the season. As long as the batsmen find a bit of form and bat to their potential we should be soon heading for mid table obscurity!
