Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 5 wickets

Match report After last weeks shoeing from the Gymkhana boys we headed off to the leafy part of North London to play North London! Keir arrived in a panama hat which enables him to blend into the surroundings irrespective which part of London he finds himself. In Highgate you can imagine him visiting antique and book shops and in his "native" South London he just looks like a drug dealer! Anyway we all arrived in good time to find a ground that was somewhat on the small size. Put it this way, if you were looking to buy a 4 bed house with a garden that size, you would be disappointed.

Nathan won the toss and decided to bat on what was a very warm afternoon. Our batting line was certainly stronger this week and he put his faith I our boys. Unfortunately it did not go according to plan with both openers back in the hutch by the end of the 2nd over. 2 for 2 then but out went Syed Asad Hussain (making his 3rd team debut) to join Richard Parker. To say Richard was due a score was a bit of an understatement but these 2 built a very nice partnership to move the score to 66. However Richard called for an ambitious run, was duly sent back, and was run out for a season best 31. Syed and H continued to bat with typical belligerence but wickets fell at regular intervals to leave us 120 for 9. At this point Nathan (still with 5 stitches in his webbing) joined the VC and both batted with little difficulty to get the score up to an almost respectable 150. Nathan then nicked off to the keeper and that was our innings over. With the short boundaries on a blameless pitch we looked well under par. Too many batsman trying to force it when more patience was required. We could have had 12 more overs.....

After a more than adequate tea we took the field determined make the oppo fight for every run. Keir gave us the perfect start by ripping through their openers defences with the perfectly pitched inswinger that hit the top of off stump. This was the same batsman who defied us in the corresponding fixture batting for over 40 overs so what a filip this was. Their number 3 then came in and kept Keir out thereafter but Nathan stuck at the other end to get them 2 down early doors. North London then put a partnership together to enable them to get to the first drinks break at 18 overs with no further loss. Smithy did not enjoy one of his more fruitful days and after being hit for 19 in his last over he exclaimed "that was the 15th catch dropped off his bowling this season" after a one handed catch was put down on the boundary off a long hop! At 72 for 2 we needed quick wickets and Asad struck with the first ball after drinks. Their number 4 nicked one to the VC and the same combination did for the next batsman soon after. This time Asad got one to turn sharply to enable a stumping. Parker then stormed in from the other end a la Mullally and induced their number 6 to edge behind and at 90 odd for 5 we sensed an opportunity. Their number 3 kept trying to carve Parker past point but the ball must have beat his bat at least 8 times. That said he did play very well on the whole and his unbeaten knock of 83 in a low scoring game was the match winning innings.

So another defeat for the 3s but we can certainly take some positives from this one. The batting of Parker and Chas, the bowling by Asad (easily his best spell this season) and again the general fielding was of a very good standard (apart from Ali's underarm 4 overthrows!).

Finally a mention for our umpire, the eccentric Dr Clark Bsc, Phd, DotD! The last lot of letters he earned on Saturday when trying to flog a microwave on the 3s Whats App group. Totally random and uncalled for! That said we do appreciate you umpiring for us old boy and congrats to you and your good lady on your impending parenthood. We are not sure if the conception was natural or the result of one of your experiments but we wish you both well!
