Match report It was crunch time for the 3s as they travelled to Southgate to face the champions on the back of 2 disappointing displays. Could they handle the pressure? Well Nathan picked a side this week that only contained players with plums of steel! We were however "rocked" by the late withdrawal of Smithy who had the trots. He appears to have caught them off the skipper.......well it's nice to share!

Well I suppose the best time to play the leaders is after they have clinched the league on a bank holiday weekend. They won the toss and elected to bat. No surprise really as they rolled us out for 70 odd in the home game and thought they fancied a bat on what was an overcast but warm day. Rashpal was back to bolster the bowling and he shared the new ball with Nathan. The oppos openers had a confident air about them but Aneeq held a blinder at gully off the skipper to get the breakthrough. Their next 2 batsmen nicked off to the VC off Rash and they were 40 for 3. We then thought we had their other opener run out when he was clearly short of his ground but the square leg umpire was unmoved. He subsequently apologised to Nathan admitting he wasn't looking! Smithy has a catchphrase for that...... Fortunately it was not to prove costly as Nathan bowled him soon after and with their number 5 and 6 batsmen not troubling the scores, Southgate found themselves on 42 for 6. A decent start then but surely we won't let this slip like we have done on numerous occasions this season? Well we kind of did although you would need to give credit their 2 oldish stagers who dug in and slowly built a partnership that took the score to 170. We didn't bowl badly but we could have bowled more consistently to get more out of a pitch that did offer some inconsistent bounce. Certainly they thought they had enough with their batsmen prodding the pitch and saying "130 is a winning score on here"......

At least we stemmed the flow at the end of the innings and allowed only 20 runs off the last 6 overs. They could not have been that confident then as they batted the full 50. We then had a bog average tea ( considering their facilities) and we tried to drum it into our batsman to play straight and keep wickets in hand. We were aware. Enfield had bowled out Twickenham cheaply so a point was enough to guarantee survival.

Aneeq opened with Andrew and he took 1 ball to have a look then thumped the next for 4. Well he never has been one to play himself in! He departed with the score on 13 but at the other end. Andrew was looking in decent nick as he put away any bad balls by their spinner who opened the bowling. However he was out to a worldie of a catch at 2nd slip to leave us on 39 for 2 in the 13th. Not a disastrous start but admittedly we were starting to count down the overs.

Abhay then joined Tom Whear and both batted very calmly to take us through to drinks at the halfway mark with the score on 72 for 2. 87 needed for the winning draw, 118 for the win and 21 overs to bat for safety! As the partnership developed both became increasingly confident and took advantage of their limited bowling resources and a big outfield where 2s were plentiful. Tom was eventually out for a well played 38 after a 89 run partnership. H then played a great cameo to help Abhay up the tempo as we breezed past the winning draw score. By now Abhay was proving difficult to bowl to as he started scoring off virtually every ball. Using his wrists he played shots all round the park and when H was out with the score on 180, it was left to Matt Gurkin to help see us over the line with an over to spare.

Abhay's knock will have to go down as the best innings played by one of our batsmen with the circumstances taken into consideration. Tom's knock also cannot be underestimated. A game that ebbed and flowed all day eventually went decisively our way. The Piccadilly Line pub crawl therefore started on a high.....before it no doubt got messy. At Hammersmith so I have been told!

DOTD? Either Gurkin for thinking Kiwis are Aussies or Aneeq for claiming he should have been in the 3s all season with his played 2 won 2 record. Well he did contribute 23 runs to the cause but........

Man of the match? 4 wickets for Rash and. Nathan, 4 catches for the VC but it's obvious really. Take a bow Abhay old boy!
