Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v North London 4 on Sat 13 May 2017 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 6 wickets

Match report The 3s had their first match at Boddingtons with a request from the skipper to make it a fortress. Well last season, to be fair, it was more of a bouncy castle welcoming oppo to an Actonians help yourself to a 10 point buffet! Just 1 win from 9 so it will be somewhat disappointing not to improve on that to put it mildly.

Well the skipper running late certainly helped which meant VC was in charge of the toss. North London's skipper called incorrectly and with the pitch looking a tad uneven, they were duly inserted. Keir and Piri took the new cherry and our fears about the pitch were realised as they were made to look like Walsh and Ambrose with some lifting deliveries from just short of a length. A couple of early chances went down but Piri eventually struck when VC just about managed to hold onto a nick. The oppo regrouped well and would have been happy with their start but Nathan got both batsmen out LBW to peg them back to 70 for 3. The 4th wicket went down soon after when their number 5 was cut in half by a Lord Whear jaffa of a ball. The batsman thought it had beaten me too but it was firmly in my left mit. He started off for a run and with a direct hit he was gone. Another good partnership took shape with 2 experienced players repelling us with relative ease. They had one scare when Piri took a wonderful one handed diving catch at square leg off Smithy only for the call of no ball for being over waist high cutting short our delirium. Smithy was philosophical as you can imagine!

Aaron on debut came on and bowled tidily to pick up 2 late wickets (including a one handed catch by Smithy at slip snaffling up a top edge sweep)with Kier chipping in too. Piri continued his fine start to the season taking 2 in the final over with North London finishing on 193. A decent score on a pitch that always kept the bowlers interested.

We again had Mabel Senior and the Lord to open the batting but a frantic start saw us to 14 for 2 after just 2 overs! Andrew was adjudged LBW and Chas came in at number 3 and ran himself out first ball going for an ambitious 3rd run. Shahid then came out to join Dave and both did very well to nullify a useful bowling attack while keeping our healthy run rate going. In fact it soon became clear North London would need to bowl us out to win. For the 2nd week running Dave got out when seemingly well set but the partnership had mustered 86 runs. Shahid followed soon after for 41 and at 113 for 4 the game was still in the balance. However Aaron and Walter saw us home with an unbroken stand of 84. Walter picked off the singles and put away the bad balls. Aaron, after an edgy start, soon got going and looked in good touch by the end.

A win by 6 wickets and with 9 overs to spare we denied North London a bonus point too. A good win over good oppo which follows on from a decent performance last week. We still need to improve our catching but ground fielding was very good with little given away.

DotD has to be Chas for arriving late and running himself out first ball! Best not mention him being blocked on social media by a girl he spent the night with! On that subject the skipper appears to be in fine form. Dates coming out of his ears and flip flops! He is looking to hire a private secretary so if you're interested please drop him a line to kiwigigolo@veryhotmail.com.

Toughie next week at Hampstead but the 3s are in good shape.
