Osterley 4 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 03 Jun 2017 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 102 runs

Match report With the top 4 sides in the league threatening to get away from us, we faced an Osterley side who had won 3 out of their 4 games. We arrived in good time although the skipper was not looking too perky. Perhaps the 5 am departure from Birmingham played its part there! This undoubtedly contributed to his Schlong de la Jour moment at the toss. Nathan called heads, he looked at the coin and told their skipper we would have a bowl. However their skipper was duty bound to point out that it had come down a tail!! Not only had he claimed to have won a toss he lost, he also showed them our intentions. We were duly inserted. Bit of a surprise bearing in mind virtually all their team were fasting on what was a pretty warm day.

Anyway Maben Senior ( on the eve of becoming even more senior) opened with Lewis but for the 2nd week running we lost 2 very early wickets. Andrew, showing the same level of judgement the American electorate showed a few months ago, left a straight one, and Shahid soon followed playing all round a straight one. 12 for 2 in the 4th over then but this brought in Asif who is known as Huggy Bear. Now the Huggy Bear I remember from Starsky Hutch was tall, very slim with no facial hair. So you can see how Asif got that nickname!! Along with Lewis they set about rebuilding the innings with Asif nudging the singles and Lewis finding the boundary on a regular basis. Osterley did not help themselves by dropping a number of catches which were to prove very costly. Lewis brought up his half century and was out soon after. However their partnership was worth 102 ( which turned out to be the winning margin) and with about 20 overs to go we were set for a decent total. 3 further quick wickets left us on 131 for 5 and a below par score was again on the cards.

At this point Tushar, promoted to 7, came in to join Asif and another rebuild job was needed. What a partnership these two put together. Asif, having taken his time thus far, went ballistic. With TP allowing him the lions share of the strike, Asif struck 8 6s in no time and they ended up putting together a stand of 104 in around 12 overs. Asif finally fell for a brilliantly made 131 notwithstanding the fact he was also fasting. TP landed some lusty blows in final overs and an imposing total of 265 was posted.

After a good tea the 3s knew Osterley were going to come at us hard with a required run rate of nearly 7 an over. They did indeed get off to a good start but Keir struck in his 2nd over when their young opener was a bit unlucky to drag one on. Another wicket came in his next over and at 26 for 2 Osterley were up against it. A decent partnership then took the score to 60 but 4 quick wickets saw them slip to 66 for 6. Piri picked up a couple in another very good opening spell and the skipper chipped in with 1. Nathan actually bowled 2 maidens to start with but he perhaps should have quit while he was ahead as the next two went for 20! The other wicket was a run out which was a farcical affair. The ball was played behind square on the offside, the batsman on strike set off, Tim Wallace fielded the ball and had a shy, ball missed and ended up at mid wicket with Andrew, he rolled ball towards stumps, both batsman at bowlers end meantime, Asif ran towards stumps to gather ball and knocked off bail before gathering ball, batsmen still at bowlers end, Asif picks up ball and removes stump from ground. The non striker didn't leave his crease so the striker was out.....!!! Hope you followed that.

There then followed a good partnership of 80 which gave their score some respectability. However we were never really in any great danger. We took pace off the ball in the form of young Tim Wallace and that man Huggy Bear. They cleaned up the tail with 2 wickets a piece as the innings ended somewhat abruptly at 163.

A very satisfying win over a decent side who have started the season well. Asif clearly took the batting honours ably assisted by Lewis and TP. We were collectively very good in the field with the wickets being shared around. That is the last of the limited overs games for a while but we have at least given ourselves a decent platform to have a good season. Onwards and beerwards.......
