Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Enfield 3 on Sat 01 Jul 2017 at 12.30pm
Match was Drawn Losing Draw
Match report
This week saw a clash of 2 teams with similar records so far this season lurking around the mid table obscurity area! Both teams also supplied an umpire which is rare for a 3rd team game but all the better for it. Nathan continued his winning streak on the toss front and once again the oppo were given first use of a green looking Boddingtons track. Grass is actually a good sign here as it helps to provide a "flattish" surface.
Kier and Nathan opened up and bowled enough good balls to command the respect of their 2 left handed openers. However we did get lucky when their skipper got an inside edge on a Kier delivery onto his pads only to look round and see the ball trickle towards the stumps and remove the off bail. The wickets started to fall regularly thereafter with Kier and Nathan both bagging 2 with Andrew Thompson coming on 1st change to nab another, it left Enfield at 50 odd for 5.
At this point they had a youngster coming out to join their Sri Lankan keeper who was bizarrely kitted out in a black flat cap. His headgear didn't seem to concern him too much as he started putting bat to ball taking a particular liking to Andrew's full and straight deliveries. At the other end the youngster was doing a good impression of Brigadier Block as everything we threw at him was met by a very straight bat. He played an excellent innings for his team though as Enfield began to put together a useful total. Their number 9 played another good knock scoring 34 in good time and our failure to take the 9th wicket quickly allowed the youngsters dad to arrive and get padded up to bat at 11. This allowed a few more runs to be scored and took the innings to nearly 49 overs. In the final analysis it was to cost them more than us.
We ended up having to chase 197 in 43 overs. Our task was made slightly easier by the 5 penalty runs awarded to us by the umpires. Enfield's umpire warned their keeper about running down the pitch twice and when he transgressed again, umpire Thistlethwaite was on the case. Unusual but somewhat daft on the batsmans part.
Maben Senior and Lord Whear opened up but the former was out in the 2nd over in bizarre fashion. He got one that lifted more than it should have, gloved it in the air, turned round and saw the ball drop right onto his stumps. This meant Chas and Dave were together at the crease. Well there was no danger of a knees up, Cockney or otherwise with Chas in the middle but they got our innings back on track with a 54 run partnership. The birthday "boy" then gave their spinner a return catch but with The reassuring site of Asif coming out to bat we still looked in good shape. Asif could only manage a dozen but Sameer and Chas looked to have things under control as we reached drinks at 113 for 3 off 25 overs. 84 needed off 18 overs so we had to be favourites.
The next four overs saw the game change on its head as we lost 3 quick wickets. Chas, having worked hard for his 35, played around a straight one, Aneeq holed out to long on for a duck and Andrew Thompson followed the very next ball. Piri then helped Sameer take the score to 147 but Sameer fell when their opening bowlers returned. The VC then joined Piri as the winning draw score of 174 was now looking a more realistic target. However runs proved difficult with numerous borderline wide balls coming our way. Ironically we were both bowled by rare straight ones and it left Kier and Nathan to bat out the final 3 overs to salvage a losing draw. This they did with few alarms.
Not the result we wanted from a game we largely we in control of. In the end we were outplayed in the final 10-15 overs of both innings. So at the half way stage of the season we have won 4 lost 4 and drawn 1. Definitely a lot there to build on but we need to put out foot on the throats so to speak when the oppo are struggling.
