Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Indian Gymkhana 3 on Sat 08 Jul 2017 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 53 runs

Match report After last weeks less than inspiring losing draw against Enfield the 3s began the 2nd half of the season welcoming Indian Gymkhana to Boddingtons. With Walter succumbing to a touch of the old Aztec 2 Step Shahid was drafted in Saturday morning. Nathan won yet another toss and was persuaded to bat first by the wise and not quite so wise! It was another warm day so get the oppo to field for 3 and a half hours, bat 50 overs and put a score on the board. IG are 2nd in the table and badly needed a win after slipping up last week. Well talking a good game is one thing but with the best will in the world.........

Maben Senior opened up with 2 Metre Charlie and they got us off to a nice steady start in the face of some decent new ball bowling. Charlie was a bit unlucky to get out when he just failed to get over a ball he guided to gully but with Chas departing soon after we found ourselves 32 for 2. This brought in Sameer to the crease who exudes calm authority when he bats these days. He and Andrew duly set about getting the innings back on track until the latter got one that lifted a bit off a length and he popped up a simple catch. Shahid and Sameer then put together a partnership that went a long way to deciding the game. Both cashed in on some loose deliveries from their spinner who did extract a decent amount of turn. The two put on 74 in just over 10 overs. Aneeq and TP kept the momentum going and by the time Sameer was out for a very well made 78 we had reached 215 with 7 overs to go. We managed to bat out the 50 and with a score of 251 had given ourselves something to bowl at.

This week we feasted on an excellent tea supplied by Aneeqs better half as we braced ourselves for the expected onslaught by the IG batsmen. Nathan opened up and after 1 legal delivery they were 9 for 0! First ball was smacked over his head for 4 and the next ball was a no ball that also went for 4. Still a long way to go and all that......... Vaughan came steaming in from the other end and struck first ball when their opener ballooned a pull shot to Sameer who made good ground at wide mid on. IG continued to attack and boundaries continued to flow. There number 3 then played an awful hoick across the line to be bowled by the big Kiwi. The skipper then induced the number 4 to glove to the VC (first sniff of a nick for 4 weeks!), the other opener clipped Vaughan straight to square leg and Chas held a very sharp low catch at slip off TP to leave IG 70 for 6 after 10 overs. Their late order kept up and even increased the run rate and while there was no panic in the ranks, it was clearly very desirable to take the last few wickets in reasonable haste!

It was Goldern Arms cue to come on and bowl a couple of pies to seal the deal. Yes our lucky charm, one Aneeq Malik, he of the ridiculously long run up with a stutter and no follow through came on to mesmerise the IG batsmen. He managed to convince one batsman to dolly up a wide long hop to gully, then the very next ball (first ball of his next over) he bowled a juicy wide half volley which was lobbed up straight to Shahid at extra cover. Unfortunately we didn't realise he was on a hat-trick but thankfully that didn't materialise!

Vaughan returned to pick up the last wicket to claim his first five for in Actonians colours. IG were bowled out for 198 in just under 28 overs. They still had 14 available and were no doubt regretting their somewhat frenetic approach by the top order who were clearly very able batsmen.

An excellent win then for the 3s which has to go down as our best performance so far this season. Sameer and Vaughan taking the individual honours but everyone contributed. The catching was excellent and a special mention for 2 Metre Charlie who gamely carried on in the field after injuring is back.

And another thing.......Nathan often tells his bowlers "a wicket buys you another over". Very reasonable. However is there a club rule that says a skipper getting a wicket buys him 3 overs? One for Cliff perhaps. Sameer has joined our What's App group no doubt trying to fill the void created by Smithys "resignation". Sameer announced he woke up Sunday with a smile on his face. Not clear if this is related to the fine win or...........!! Lastly Aneeq is deciding on Chicken Balti or Steak and Ale for his pie filling next week!
