Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v SKLP 3 on Sat 09 Jun 2018 at 12.30pm
Match was Drawn Losing Draw
Match report
Personally it had been a difficult week for me. Not only had we lost our unbeaten record to the Tamils, I had to turn down the chance to go on Love Island due to having to pick up my first denture at the dentist! In addition I had a difficult trip to Tesco’s with a shopping list which meant I had to go to the feminine hygiene isle. When I realised they did not have Bodyform item that was on the list, where do you go from there? As if that wasn’t enough for a man to deal with, the 3rd XI selection email came out which included one Moany Marcus on it.......
So we were back to Boddingtons again this week to take on another promoted side. This time our opponents were SKLP who are the only team to have beaten leaders Crouch End so far. Nathan won the toss and put them in. Well it was our first timed game and on balance it was probably a fair call. Shaun was back to open the bowling with the skipper and although we didn’t get an early breakthrough, we kept the run rate in check despite a positive approach from the oppo. They did in fact put on 76 for the 1st wicket when TB struck when a full bunger was clubbed behind square leg where Sahil held out his left mit and took a fine catch. Sahil himself came on at the other end and bowled his best spell for the club picking up the other opener and bowling 4 maidens. Wickets continued to fall and after 35 overs SKLP found themselves 102 for 5. However we missed 2 great opportunities to get their number 4 out which was to prove very costly. A relatively straightforward catch to cover was followed by a run out chance when he was halfway down the pitch. At 123 for 6 we were well on top but the number 4 then found a capable partner and as the partnership grew our bowling began to get a bit ragged and after hitting 19 off the last over, they posted a useful looking 215 with the last wicket falling off the last ball of the 50th over.
So we were left with 42 overs on a wicket that was better than last weeks but was nevertheless a bit on the slow and low side. 2 Metre had his old mate Arkwright back to open with but the former went early when he quit on a drive and was caught at cover. Idris then joined Andrew and they batted calmly and sensibly to get us back in the game. The partnership realised 105 when Idris rightly tried to put his foot on the gas but was bowled for 59. Needing 105 off 13 overs was going to be a tough ask but our positive approach only brought the regular downfall of batsman. Like last week the middle order could not get going including Marcus whose innings of 5 was marginally higher than the 3 buzzers he conceded earlier! We then set our sights on 181 to pick up a winning draw but ultimately that proved beyond us too as we fell just short at 174. Andrew carried his bat to be 58 not out but there was an overall sense of disappointment at the losing draw outcome.
Overall a big improvement on last week with our bowling in particular. Still too many wides though. Shaun and Sahil were the pick with Andrew and Idris taking the batting honours. A couple of errors in the field cost us but to be fair they were a decent side who bowled steadily giving us few freebies to feed off. Perhaps a few more nerdles here and there would have helped!
Schlong de la Jour? A few candidates this week. Both TB and Huggy bowled no balls when they knocked over the bails at the non strikers end. It proved expensive for Huggy as his delivery went for a maximum! However the honours went to Andrew Maben who somehow knocked over the stumps when taking guard!
