Match report With our winless run now reaching the 2 month mark, the 3s found themselves playing the bottom side this week. Defeat to the Tamils in the corresponding fixture started our downturn in fortunes so we were more than ready for this one. Despite the skippers absence we were boosted by the return of Arkwright and the sight of Abhay on the team sheet strengthened our batting further. After passing his driving test last week Keir decided to drive from Saaath London in his Golf......not a Kia by the way!

VC won the toss and although the pitch looked pretty flat, decided to bowl first. The start was slightly delayed by American Football training on an adjacent pitch. The first of many reasons why this game seemed to go on forever! Keir and own Tamil, Piri, shared the new ball and true to form kept things nice and tight but without a great deal of luck. Most runs seemed to come of the outside edge but Piri did eventually remove one of the openers when VC skilfully knocked up an outside edge giving Abhay a simple catch at 2nd slip. Hamza came on first change and snared the other opener and this brought in the main man at number 4. The number 3 appeared to nick off early on but unfortunately the umpire did not agree so he camped in for a lengthy innings allowing more able batters to score freely at the other end. The score moved to 104 when bucket hands 2 Metre held a good catch on the extra cover boundary to dismiss the number 4. A big wicket but in fairness to the oppo they kept the score ticking in the face of some decent bowling. Both Shaun and Lord Whear were unlucky not pick up wickets as the oppo decided to use their full allowance of 50 overs. Piri returned to pick 3 more at the death and Hamza made it 10 in 2 games with 3 of his own.

247 to win then in 42 overs. A challenging total but we knew we had a decent chance with our line up, a quick outfield and a pitch not offering much for the bowlers. The old firm got their pads on and into battle they went. The runs flowed pretty much from the start as their bowlers seemed to pose little threat. They both decided to go round the wicket to Arkwright but when he asked for the sightscreens to be moved, the oppo refused stating there is nothing in the rules that states they have to! We posted a couple of guys at one end but the screen the other side remained unmoved. The partnership realised 85 until Andrew was out caught and bowled in the 15th over. This brought in Huggy and along with Charlie they really started to take advantage of the fact that most of the oppo were entitled to apply for a funeral protection plan. However some of the oppo did decide to take shelter under the weeping willow after expressing disappointment at a decision that did not go their way. After a 20 minute delay and the intervention of Kofi Annan and Boutros Boutros-Ghali the match did resume and Huggy hit the first ball for a maximum. Welcome back chaps I think he was trying to say.

They got the score to 190 before Charlie got stumped when a century was very much in the offing and Huggy followed soon after when he got run out. We then needed 52 runs off the last 9 overs so just under a run a ball. Abhay knocked it around sensibly and with a few lusty blows from Hamza the equation was firmly in our favour. Hamza fell with the score on 229 but Shahid came in to see Abhay finish it off in style with an Ali Kebabs maximum!

The game didn’t finish until about 8 o’clock but thankfully we did manage to see this one out and pick up a valuable 10 points. I have spared you a lot of the detail here but I’m not sure cricket was the winner. We bowled without much luck but credit to our top order for getting the job done. Man of the match has to be Charlie who continues his remarkably consistent run of form this season.

Schlong de la Jour? Has to go to the Chairman who went for a catch last ball of their innings that even in his prime he would have had little chance. Good intent but.......it went for four!

Lastly I observed that the scab on my left knee remained intact this week. I’m sure the skippers absence is just a coincidence!
