Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Osterley 4 on Sat 18 Aug 2018 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 35 runs

Match report Having halted our slide down the league with successive wins, the 3s were up against an Osterley side short of wins themselves of late. They won the toss and elected to bat due to late arrivals which was fine by us with the Boddingtons pitch having a green tinge to it. The biggest swinger in town, Keir, was back this week and he took the new ball with Junior. Now Junior bowls one “miracle” ball per season and although he has left it late this season, it was delivered on this day. The poor unsuspecting victim was their number 2 who half pushed forward to a delivery that pitched on middle and leg, left him late, and clattered into off. Not sure who looked more shocked. Junior or the batsman?! Anyway both opening bowlers bowled very well and could have picked up more wickets but at least the run rate was kept around 2 an over for the first dozen or so overs. Keir bowled his 10 overs straight through and had to wait for his scalp when their previously watchful opener played a loose shoot inside an inswinger. Hamza got rid of their number 3 and at 30 for 3 we were in control. Their skipper came in and played a counter attacking knock that proved decisive. Boundaries started to come as bowlers lost their lines and lengths for several overs. However the Qamar brothers combined to peg them back but no before Osterley managed to post a score of 152 to give themselves something to bowl at.

After indulging ourselves with a Karen tea we sent out Arkwright and Robboooow to provide us with a platform to secure a win that would guarantee our survival in Division 1. Batting was not straightforward but Boris Junior was looking in very good order with straight drives and wrists strokes through square leg. 37 without loss in the 8th over we were set fair. However Arkwright was castled and when they brought their young leg spinner on, we decided to play a range of weird and wonderful, but loose, shots. Before we knew it we were 66 for 6 and making a right Horlicks of it. At this point VC came into join Sir Geoff and it was time for some good old fashioned dogs of war old school batting. Their off spinner was getting good turn from the other end and the 153 target looked a long way away. The score moved to 94 when VC was bowled by the returning opener and Keir showed he was no mug with the bat as he continued to provide support for Geoff. However once he quit on a drive and gave a return catch to the bowler, the innings quickly drew to a close. Geoff was last man out trying to push the score along but he made joint top score.

We have batted pretty well this season but this was a poor effort by us. It was not the easiest pitch to bat on but too many batsman got themselves out and failed adapt to the conditions which lets face it should not be alien to us bearing in mind it’s our home pitch! On the positive side we bowled ok with Keir and Junior the stand outs. We also fielded much better with no dropped catches if I recall correctly! In addition we subsequently found out that Enfield had lost at Winchmore Hill so we are safe before our trip up there next week. Hopefully we can end this frustrating season on a high with 2 wins.

Schlong de la Jour? Has to got to Robboooow for attempting a reverse sweep to the young leg spinners very first ball!!
