Actonians Cricket Club Womens 1st XI v Harrow St Mary's CC Ladies on Sun 27 Jun 2021 at 1.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report An overcast Sunday morning and the threat of rain welcomed us to a slightly less divetted pitch than last week. After overexerting herself at training by being too good, an injured Riya meant Madz had a late call up and rose to the occassion. This week also signified the return of one of Durham's finest badgers, Saoirse del Tofu.

After a tactical loss of the toss by Captain Davies, we were sent into bat by the opposition which was our preferred option.
The last few weeks have produced a strong opening partnership from Katie and Maz and so we were hoping for a continuation of the trend to set up the innings nicely. This was the case for the first 10 overs. Unfortunately after some tight bowling from the opposition both openers were out with 2 new bats Keely and Eva sent in in quick succession. Just a few overs later, some miscommunication and overeager running from Eva lead to her being run out, despite her desperate dive back.

At this point disaster struck as yet another youngster Gio had to pull out of the match due to her school isolation policy, leaving us panicked that we would have to continue the match with 10 players. But we had no reason to fear. Despite planning her Sunday to consist of watching a nice game of cricket with a picnic, Sally Cheeseman was roped in to donning the whites and bailing us out.

Another quick wicket from the oppo lead to Saoirse and Charlie needing to steady the collapse. They looked in solid stead, hitting some boundaries and bringing up the run rate but another run out led to Charlie departing the crease. In came lanky Baigent, who had been looking forward to a good knock and was looking comfortable until a worldy of a catch at midwicket. Both Saoirse and Sarah were top scorers with 21 and 17 respectively. Unfortunately our tail weren't able to keep out Harrows tight bowling and we were left with our last duo of Emily and Sally with 5 overs to go. Emily scored a glorious 1 to bring up the team 100 and celebrated it as an individual century before a straight yorker ended the innings, Actonians scoring 101.

With a fairly low total, a tight fielding performance was needed. Fueled up with homemade cakes by Katie, Actonians took to the field with opening bowling from Sarah and Eva.
However, Harrow seemed to have their own game plan by coming out attacking and scoring 19 off the first 2 overs, not the start we had hoped for. It seemed that the day was just not going our way with not 1 but 2 wickets being taken, only to be disallowed by being no balls. A classic off stump wicket from Saoirse, bur front foot no ball, and a top class quick reaction catch in the slips by Aishah off Maz, but a high no ball. There were also a handful of drop catches, with Maz exclaiming if only she was younger when she was just fingertips away from a near caught and bowled.
Soon into the innings, Sally became a ball magnet and was showing everyone up with her determined and spectacular fielding, some would even say it was men 1st XI standard, whilst also showing us her ballet skills. The first wicket fell in the 12th over, with a dramatic forward diving catch by the one and only Tofu, off Maz's bowling. Harrow 66-1. This was the release we needed as the second wicket fell shortly after with a tactical leave by wicket keeper number 2 leading to a run out by Aishah. Unfortunately it was all too little too late and despite tightening up the run rate with Saoirse's trademark variations and speed, Harrow completed the total with 8 wickets and 23 overs to spare.

The man of the match honour was shared between Saoirse and Sally for their all round cricketing performance and attitude.
This game opened up a lot of things to work on which were covered in our post match "interview" with the skip, but with this renewed fight and work behind us, we are looking forward to facing Ealing in the next match on Sunday and returning to our winning form.
