Match report CAMPAIGN REPORT from the Committee to Make Cricket Proper Again (M.C.P.A) led by the Hon. William Yates Esq., BA Hons (Oxon) .

The Campaign can record some definite successes from this weekend. There was the return of the timed format after several weeks of this ridiculous new-fangled overs format, which is really only for women and children.

There was also some proper batting from A.R. Jones (24) and Roger Masterton (MBE probably) (46), who, after being politely asked to bat by the opposition, proceeded to play top order batting position as God intended with a cavalier disregard for actually bothering to score. Boycottian crease occupation was the order of the day as the Actonians got towards drinks at 76-1.

After drinks were taken (sadly cold drinks rather than scalding hot tea), the Actonians continued in a proper and timeworn manner with a middle order collapse after Roger was run out in spectacular fashion by an older gentleman fielding/resting at mid on.

It was left to the thoroughly proper technique of our glorious captain, leader and the architect of M.C.P.A, to make a quick 40 with the able assistance of Smithy (15*) to haul our total to an eminently respectable 189-9 off 50.

After a decidedly proper tea, bowlers were quickly amongst the wickets: some thoroughly improper running and some old school swing bowling from R Gupta (3-37) saw their top order in a mess and the A's sniffing victory.

Two key partnerships slowly inched their score towards respectability and despite Smithy (2-21) cracking open the first and some canny off spin from Taz (2-27) keeping a lid on scoring rates, as we headed towards the end of the game any result was possible. A spirited 33* from their number 7 and some grim resistance from their tail saw them nine down and four away from the winning draw heading into the last over. Rather than trying to settle for four points, we rightly went in for the kill. Sadly, the final wicket eluded us and they finished nine down for 162 off their 42.

Both teams left after a draw was declared which is frankly the only proper result a gentleman can accept. Winning would be a vulgar and possibly American way to conclude a game. Until next time - TTFN.
