Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Ruislip Victoria on Sat 18 Jun 2022 at 1:30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 23

Match report The 4s picked up a very useful 12 points this week when Teddington conceded our league game. However an alternative fixture was found for us in the guise of Ruislip Victoria 2s. We were “rocked” by the news before the game that Bilal had scratched in order to go to IKEA. Flat Pack Billy, as he will now be known, had set that bar very high for Schlong de la Jour early doors but where this an Aneeq, there’s a way! More on that later.

The skipper was keen to bat first, set a target and bowl them out to replicate what we would have liked to have done to Teddington I guess so he won the toss to enable us to have first dig. Young Ben Moerdyk was given the task of opening with the Big Show. A real contrast here in batting philosophies! The used pitch looked very dry and from the off the odd ball took off from a length. Clearly not prepared properly and not great for blooding our colts in adult cricket. Still these two batted very well avoiding the ones that misbehaved and taking advantage of the odd bad ball. Aneeq in particular found the boundary often but when the score reached 49 he attempted to slog a straight one over cow and was out LBW. Debutant Cam Dawson then came in to join Ben and he didn’t take long to find his range with some impressive offside drives. Meanwhile young Ben had to take a few blows but he always got into the line the following ball and showed maturity well beyond his years. He did eventually fall for 32 when the score had passed 100 and had done a great job for the team. This brought in Rakesh who made a typically ebullient 39 as he and Cam really got the scoreboard moving. Cam was retired for a well constructed 74 as we declared on 241 after 39 overs leaving the oppo 45 to get the runs.

After a fine tea supplied by Chloe and Nathan we set about the task of bowling the oppo out. We did end up one short as Ben missed his train back from Nottingham (another Schlong de la Jour candidate?) but the vagaries of the pitch would surely provide enough opportunities? The skipper shared the new ball with Nathan and both were steady enough without offering the sort of penetration you would hope for on a lads holiday in Magaluf! Eventually JD, who was suffering with food poisoning, was summoned from his clenched position at 1st slip to have a tweak. Displaying the sort of flight and guile rarely seen at Boddingtons he soon picked up 4 wickets to put us firmly in control at 66-4. The oppos middle order started to put a couple of partnerships together and at 157 for 5 they were sensing victory. The skipper then brought himself back on to bowl his brand of poo off spin. Remarkably it did the trick with a long hop well caught by Laurence Daly-Jones at cow followed next ball by a catch by Ben. Thankfully the hat-trick ball was safely negotiated but when their number 8 played on unluckily to Nathan they looked a dead and buried at 168 for 8. A ninth wicket partnership of 40 raised their hopes again but Ben came on and induced a nick behind and JD returned to complete a 5 wicket haul to finish the game as we won by 23 runs. A good game of cricket play in the right spirit.

Man of the match has to be a toss up between Cam and JD but as for Schlong de la Jour, there’s a few outstanding candidates. Ben Bell for missing his train, Flat Pack Billy for his IKEA trip and of course the main man, the Big Show, the Coach! Aneeq opened with a 13 year old and insisted that Ben faced the first ball. Ben then nerdled the first ball to third man and Aneeq turned down the run! While umpiring he then suggested to Rohit he declared because he fancied a bowl. A few overs later he suggested a declaration because he was hungry! What a team man, what a Schlong de la Jour! Can’t believe Billy didn’t get it but he clearly had faith in Aneeq.
