Match report Actonians Girls U13 vs Shepherd’s Bush CC – 16th May 2023

The view from the boundary by Al Ebdon

On a very bright and sunny Tuesday afternoon we made the short hop across to Shepherd’s Bush for the second U13 game of the season. And a very nice ground it is too, with a warm welcome from the Shepherd’s Bush team.

Molly was captain for this week’s match and having been put in to bat, she strode forward to the middle with Alice to get us underway. Things started well, with good patience at the crease and some nice shots on show – Alice hitting a cracker over fine leg for four, and a classic-looking cover drive from Molly.

In the 3rd over Molly was clean bowled by a straight one, looking to swing a little too much at a ball that demanded a more defensive reply. Valeria came in and took to the crease with her trademark energy, showing some nice shots through the covers and a sweep to fine leg for four. A swing and a miss brought her innings to an end in over five however, bringing new recruit Neha in to bat. She was extremely unlucky to get a great delivery first up, hitting the stumps.

The hat-trick was duly avoided, and Alice and Hannah batted together nicely for the next few overs, steadying the ship. Alice by now had played herself in and was seeing the ball well, displaying some lovely sweeps to the fine leg boundary in particular.

Hannah’s decent cameo came to an end in the 9th over, clean bowled swinging a bit too hard at a straight one. Definitely a theme to the Actonians’ dismissals! Daisy came to the middle and showed some lovely work with the willow, tipping one to point for a quick run and hitting a nice square cut for more runs. Throughout the innings the Actonians’ calling and running had been pretty good – the indoor season clearly having had a positive effect in that regard. It was a bit risky at times however, and they might have suffered more run outs had the opponents’ fielding been a little sharper. No more clearly shown than in the 12th over when a run out was just avoided owing to the bowler taking the bails off with her hand as the ball was about to hit the stumps. A lucky escape.

Alice had departed trying to hit out to advance the scoring rate – well caught by the Shepherds Bush player. Actonians’ luck with risky running then came to an end with Eydie run out on a rather adventurous attempt at a quick score. And with Daisy bowled out in the 15th over, Sia was left on her own and the innings came to an end.

A decent score of 84. Some great stuff on show from the Actonians team. If only they’d been able to stay in a little longer and bat through their overs, the total might have been that much bigger!

With a slight chill starting to develop in the spring evening (we’d learned from the first game of the season and brought a coat!), Actonians took to the field to defend their total. Valeria and Hannah opened things up with a great deal of fire. Which paid early dividends – Valeria sending a stump cartwheeling from the ground in a manner akin to the 1980s West Indies bowling attack! With all this fire on show, Molly was doing well behind the stumps in her keeping, well aided by Eydie in a sweeper role behind her.

Alice and Neha were the first bowling changes. Alice kept a good line with some good fielding providing support. Neha bowled nicely, with two close attempts at caught and bowled in her first over. Great commitment!

A fabulous yorker from Alice claimed the second wicket in over seven, followed in the eighth over by a wicket for Neha – a really great catch from Hannah to take one from out of the heavens with the sun in her eyes.

Daisy took over bowling duties in the 9th over, leading to a fantastic run out – Valeria arrowing a throw to Alice (now playing wicket keeper) who duly removed the bails. The perfect example of how energy in the field reaps rewards.

As we moved to the middle overs the oppositions’ scoring rate seemed to advance and it was looking increasingly tricky to defend the Actonians’ total, given the amount of bowling still to do. Molly took a wicket leg before – a dismissal that umpire Bal described as ‘absolutely plumb’. Eydie bowled well also, but there was just too much work to do and Shepherds Bush duly knocked off the required runs to take the win.

All in all it was a very enjoyable match to watch, played in a great spirit, and there was once again a lot to like about the Actonians performance. Not least the amount of support the girls had for each other, keeping things vocal in the field. Special mention to Neha, who fitted in to the side fantastically from the first moment and provided great support to her fellow players.

There’s still opportunities for more success in the field, so room to keep working on fielding sharpness and decision-making. We definitely left a few run outs on the table in that game. As in the first game of the season, it felt like just one more wicket at the right time could have led to a different result.

With batting, the watchword has to be ‘patience’. We really need to find a way to bat our entire 20 overs. Take time to build an innings, don’t try to hit hard at every delivery, and take runs when you know there’s one on. It’s not necessary to run every time the ball is struck. But some great strokeplay on show throughout the batting lineup, so hats off to the players and coaching team for that.

Thanks to all the coaching team, to Tracy for keeping score (despite being under the weather) and to Kamal for umpiring.

Despite the loss it was a great evening of cricket. And luckily we’ll have a chance to take revenge very soon in the U15 game on Tuesday!
