Match report Old Actonians Ladies fielded first on a warm day, with openers Marilyn Smith and Kiran Baluch bowling tightly and creating chances, which all fell into the gaps in the field. A change in bowling brought instant results, with U13 Hannah Thurston, playing in her first match for the Ladies team, starting her account with a wicket maiden. Hannah continued to bowl well, and took the wickets of 4 of the top 5. Three were bowled, and the fourth was a catch behind by debutant wicket keeper Oclevia Poynter. Sarah Baigent and Viola Lough joined the attack, with Sarah taking one wicket and Viola three. Two excellent catches by Marilyn Smith at slip and Debbie Curtis diving at square leg really piled the pressure on Harrow. Reshma Garrera came on to bowl and took the 10th wicket with her first ball!
The ladies had bowled out last years league champions for just 77. Excellent fielding by the whole team, especially as we only had 10 players. Was it over confidence that caused wobbles in the batting? Openers Kiran Baluch and Cath Goold started well, until Kiran was out for 15. Katie Davies was surprised by one that lifted and offered a cheap catch to the bowler. Cath Goold was run out by a direct throw and suddenly we were 22 for 3. Marilyn Smith (14) and Oclevia Poynter (15) steadied the ship, and brought the score up to 54 for 5. The lower order held their nerve and all chipped in with runs. At 70 for 8 (in the 21st over) the game was on a knife edge. Would we score the 8 runs needed or would Harrow take our final wicket. Reshma Garrera and Hannah Thurston held their nerves with Reshma hitting the winning runs
A nailbiter to start the season ! Excellent win, with all the team playing their part. Well done
