Actonians Cricket Club Womens 1st XI v Wanstead Ladies on Sun 07 Jul 2013 at 12.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost
Match report
On a hot afternoon, Wanstead went in to bat. Viola and Sarah opened the batting, and had immediate results, with Sarah bowling the Wanstead opener in the second over. A wicket with 5 runs on the scoreboard – what a start against the league champions. Their tight bowling continued to pay dividends with Sarah taking another wicket in the fourth over, caught behind by much improved keeper Debbie Curtis. Wanstead then settled in, scoring freely, and our fielding at times seemed to be affected by the heat. Our fortunes changed when Lucy came on to bowl, and took 2 quick wickets to zap more energy into us. Maz kept the score down and took a wicket on the last ball, as the batsman was winding up for a big finale. We were left chasing 97 off 20 overs, an achievable target.
Cath and Sarah opened with good intent, until Sarah was out with the score on 15. Maz played a stupid shot to be bowled early and then Katie was unlikely with a mix up over a no ball and run out. Lucy had a short cameo and then Viola came to the crease with Cath, who was still there, holding the innings together. They pushed the score up to 75, when Cath was finally out lbw for 19. Viola then took charge, moving the score along with Reshma, until she was out, top scoring with 23 and the score on 94. The pressure was now on Debbie and Reshma, who batted very sensibly. With the scores tied, one run was needed off the last ball. It hit Debbie’s foot and the team on the touchlines screamed at Debbie to run, not seeing the umpire put up his finger to give her out lbw.
So, for the second year running, we tied a cup game. After last years tie with Hampstead , we had the rules enhanced to include the eventuality of a tie. That is, the team that loses the least wickets wins. Wanstead lost 6 wickets, we lost 8, so Hampstead won the match. Yet another exciting game for Old Actonian’s Ladies. Next time we will win the cliffhanger! Lots to work on in the field, and with our batting, but still entertaining the crowds and playing as a team. Bowling one less wide, or one less misfield, and we would have won.
So, out of the cup but still 4 league matches to play. Stick with it ladies, its still all to play for
