Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Perivale Phoenicians 3 on Sat 03 Sep 2016 at 12.00noon
Match was Abandoned 1 point each
Match report
With our division 1 safety assured this game against bottom of the league Perivale had an end of term feel about it. With both teams looking to bat first (well the forecast was rightly grim) Perivale called correctly and we were invited to field.
The new ball was shared by the Smithanator and Tom Whear. There was enough in the pitch to encourage the bowlers but the opening batsman seemed intent on smashing everything with no foot movement. Tom eventually induced a nick and Smithy trapped their skipper LBW to leave them 31 for 2. Tom struck twice more and with Keir coming on to claim a wicket with his 2nd ball Perivale were in a spot of bother at 68 for 5. However as we have proved time and again this season we have lacked the killer touch and their lower middle order started to make hay. Most overs contained a loose delivery as Perivale maintained a healthy run rate during the recovery. The next wicket came with the score on 117 but with their number 5 striking it well, we started to look a bit ragged. Nathan copped one on the foot and then brought himself on to bowl. The 1st over looked stiffer than a piece of starched cardboard and when when the 2nd went for 16, the VC got the nod to have a twirl. 3rd ball their number 5 was trapped LBW for 74 and I think he must have been fooled by a rare straight one! The oppo where nonetheless on their way to a good score and declared on 262 for 8 after 46 overs.
We had the consolation of a Karen tea and having bowled first we duly got tucked in. The Gurkin was then sent in to bat with Andrew which was certainly a signal of intent. Andrew hit 2 boundaries in the first over and seemingly the tone of the run chase was set. Matt hit a dreamy cover drive but was bowled soon after. The same mode of dismissal did for Andrew and then Vish on his farewell appearance. Abhay carried on from where he left off last week and was on unbeaten on 26 when the rain forced us off never to return. Bit of a shame the last game ended like this but at least there was nothing riding on the game.
As mentioned already this was Vish's last game as he is moving to Bromley. This will not go down as his finest match with bowling figures of 0-34, a duck and a passable impression of someone playing the symbols when taking over behind the sticks! However successfully run clubs are built on having people like Vish in them and we wish him all the best for the future. Hopefully we will see him again either at cricket week or in a catalogue of natty knitwear!
That's about that then as far as this season is concerned. Wel done to Nathan for all his hard work over the season and I also need to mention the sterling work of umpire Nick Clark and scoreless Richard Thistlethwaite who both played their part in this enjoyable season. See you all at the dinner.....onwards and beerwards.
