Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Highgate 4 on Sat 03 Aug 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 9 wickets
Match report
Having taken 9 timed games to gain our first win last season, the 3s went into this one against Highgate hoping it would just take the 8 this season! It was actually a pretty important match as these guys had gone 2 points ahead of us and only Wycombe House and Ealing below us. Despite the general poor availability we fielded a decent side which included a 3s debut for Brad and a return to Actonians colours for Messrs Mullins and Dobree. The latter being at the wrong end of Smithys “that’s the 16th catch dropped of my bowling this season” rant at North London when Tom somehow failed to cling onto a full stretch one handed dive on the boundary!
Anyway on to this game then and the oppo rather surprisingly opted to bat first on winning the toss. Keir and the skipper shared the new ball and it wasn’t long before wickets started to fall. Having bowled 2 wides Nathan managed to utilise the 7th and 8th deliveries to take wickets! Shame about the hat trick ball in his next over that was rightly judged as wide! The score became 6 for 3 when their number 3 gloved one that lifted to Vidal Sasan at 3rd slip. Nathan then ran through the middle order claiming 3 further wickets to leave them 13 for 6 after 14 overs. Surely he can’t take all 10..........?? Thankfully not as Kier bowled the Undertaker and picked up a caught and bowled before a double bowling change at 34 for 8. Bringing on Brad and Hugh was not exactly making life any easier for Highgate as both picked up a wicket in their only over. Their number 11 ended the innings with a relative flourish as he swatted away a four and six to bring the final total to 50. A tidy performance in the field only slightly blighted by 2 dropped catches by Keir and Nathan, both off each other’s bowling!
As only 24 overs were bowled there was a quick turnaround as Smithy was sent out to open with Harry. Why was Smithy opening? Why do you ask? We are talking technique, talent, the hunger for runs........and the desire. The desire to get to Brentford for kick off! Having nurdled a stylish 3 he played around one and off he trotted to get a cab to Griffin Park. Meanwhile Harry and Tom went about the task of knocking off the runs which they did with ease in 6.1 overs. Harry helped himself to 29 of 13 balls and the 10 points were safely bagged.
So a comfortable win for the 3s but to be fair to Highgate they had 10 changes from the corresponding fixture and were clearly under strength. Only the Undertaker played in that game and he pulled a hamstring batting which meant he could not take the field. So the big rematch with Aneeq never materialised with his call up to the 2s. Skipper takes the man of the match honours and let’s give him Schlong de la Jour to keep his feet on the ground!
These games don’t come around too often but it did give us the opportunity to go over to the club to watch the 1s defend 126 assisted by some kamikaze batting by the oppo! 5 games to go then to push for mid table obscurity........
