Match report This week’s action can be summed up pretty simply. A classic League Five B affair where the oppo captain had someone new in the team, no idea who he was or what he did but turns out he was too good for the level and pretty much won the game on his own. However this match report is less concerned with the events of the match but more with magpie attacks and RJs ball of the century. More on both incidents to follow.

After losing the toss and waiting for the pitch to be prepared* we made a good start following up our disciplined bowling performances this season. We had them three down in no time with some sharp catching, good areas and committed fielding. However this led to the partnership that defined the innings. R. Inger announced himself at the crease with a six first ball and set the tone from there.

Despite being offered ones all around the wicket he actually treated his partners as if they couldn’t bat and turned down singles within the first 15 overs. Eventually he was removed by the experience and guile of Maan - a junior who bowls with the temperament of a gnarled veteran - luring him down the track and getting one to leave him for an easy stumping. By then the damage was done both to the scorecard and our teas.

Nathan claims he did his best to fend off the supposed “magpie attack” which had demolished half our tea whilst fielding. The evidence of magpies was minimal except for the suspicious holes pecked in the parathas. Some unkind observers have claimed crumbs were also spotted in Nathan’s vicinity, but such an obvious and outrageous libel will not be given the time of day in the official match report.

Once R. Inger had been dismissed we resumed our normal combination of suffocating bowling and fielding pressure to ensure they were kept to a manageable 141. Special mention must go to RJ’s ball of the century which was so slow the batsman who tried to keep it out attempted 3 shots, had a nap, then did a crossword before it eventually hit the stumps with the force of an old tabby cat lazily batting at some dust on a warm summers day.

There’s little to report on our batting other than it never really got going. For 40 overs they bowled tidily and pretty much the entire card went in the same way. We all took time to settle in on a pitch that was getting slower and lower eventually concluding we needed to get on with it before perishing the first shot in anger we played. The only exception was Bilal who stoically nurdled his way to 26 while watching teammates come and go at the other end.

A frustrating afternoon where we lost to a team with one standout player but in reality, the batting fell down in a chase that should have been easily manageable. Plenty to think about on our return to Bodders next week.

*editor’s note: Didn’t want to interrupt the flow of this report but too good not to share: The reason the pitch needed to be marked (and was done excellently by the council employee batting 11 on the other pitch) was because the groundsman had been asked to prepare two wickets. Alas, no one thought to mention they needed to be on separate pitches.
