Old Actonians Sports Club chairman (and Old As Cricket chairman), Kevin Mahoney, is teaming up with his son David to canoe all the way down the Thames to raise funds for two causes: Target Ovarian Cancer and the Samson Centre (for MS patients).
Kevin explains why they're doing this:
"On Bank Holiday weekend at the end of August my son David and I will be canoeing the Thames from its source to Teddington lock, some 130 miles or thereabouts. Along with 16 other intrepid canoeists, our aim is to raise money for two notable causes.
"My sister Jane died in September last year just 61 years young from ovarian cancer. Early diagnosis is essential as symptoms are not easily detected and more education is needed. Half of what David and I raise will go to www.targetovariancancer.org.uk.
"Old Actonians RFC have for many years supported the Samson centre, a self-help group based in Guildford which helps multiple sclerosis (MS) sufferers and their families. John Hambly, a former Old As legend, was diagnosed with MS a few years ago and we have raised over £200,000 towards facilities and equipment. We are committed to raising funds for an additional barometric chamber which considerably helps early MS sufferers. www.samsoncentre.org.uk
"I am sure you agree both of these are notable causes and deserve our support so please give generously. And while it won't soothe our aching bones, the money raised will help those far less fortunate than ourselves."
