Osterley 4 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 18 May 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 95 runs
Match report
After our attritional opener at Boddingtons last week the 3s found themselves at Osterley for their first away game. Nathan won the toss and with our bowling resources a bit stretched decided to chase. The skipper opened the bowling with Sam Boughton and both gave the openers plenty to think about with the Dukes balls seemingly doing a bit early on. Sam eventually removed both openers and with the score 56 for 2 we were in decent shape. However their number 4 came in and he soon made his intentions clear as our change bowlers struggled to contain. That said Jordan bowled some tidy off spin and looked a threat. At the other end Sam Hainsworth took his first wicket for the club with a fine caught and bowled off a full bunger and when he caught their number 5 for a duck off Jordan, their innings was in the balance. The number 6 came in and looked scratchy to start but alas he soon found his range clattering our bowling to all parts of Osterley! Both their main contributors offered fairly straightforward chances which had they been taken, would have seen them score around 250 to 270. We had no answers to the late onslaught as 6s were seemingly being scored at will. We were hampered by an injury to young Sam who was only able to bowl 3 balls in his second spell. Their mammoth 348 did include 42 wides and we were greatful for the tea break. Well sort of....... we had a plate of biryani, plate of pasta and a plate of chips with no cha or cake to be seen. A shocker of a tea which will hopefully be rectified by the home team in the coming weeks.
Faced with a daunting total it was important that the 3s put on something of a show with the bat especially after getting bowled out last week for 113. Arkwright and Tommy B opened up and the new ball was taken by the 2 guys who got the runs. Tommy got a good one early on but this brought in debutant Mike Caufield. He took a while to get going and had the odd slice of luck but the two combined to put on over a hundred for the 2nd wicket. He eventually went for a well played 59 but Andrew carried on and brought up his own half century. Unfortunately he could not quite find that extra gear to get to three figures. H fell to a fine catch and Sam H and Shahid fell after some lusty blows. It was left to Aneeq to provide some late innings entertainment. A very young colt bowled the last over and Aneeq swung so hard, he swept himself of his feet and as the ball cleared the boundary he was chewing dust! He then got stumped off a wide of what should have been the last ball so Jordan had to come in to face 1 delivery.
In the end then a pretty heavy defeat but it’s not all doom and gloom. An encouraging debut from Mike and Jordan’s figures did not do him justice. A bit of strengthening in the bowling department and more of a penchant for taking relatively simple catches and the 3s will return to winning ways.
Man of the match goes to Andrew for carrying his bat and Schlong de la Jour goes again to Aneeq for finding alternative respiratory exercise while the rest of his team mates stretched and warmed up!,
