Winchmore Hill 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 10 Aug 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 12 runs

Match report Following our comfortable win over Highgate last week we went over to Winchmore Hill to attempt our second “double” of the season. Without doubt one of the best away grounds we visit but the high winds made conditions far from ideal (to use a Gowerism). The home team won the toss and decided to bat first on what looked like a decent track. Keir and Nathan opened the bowling and the former struck early when a mistimed drive went straight to Two Metre at mid off. There was certainly extra bounce for those trundling in at Keir’s end and he soon tested out their number three with a “bouncer “. Unfortunately for the batsman his attempted pull diverted the ball on to his eye brow and claret was duly spilt. Ironically the last time we played these guys their doctor keeper copped one of a length and as he was playing for their 2s on the main pitch, they brought him over to make sure he was ok. He took no further part in the game but I can thankfully report he was back at the ground before the end of the match having got glued at the hospital and he was fine.

After an understandable stoppage Nathan soon struck twice to leave them 30 odd for 3. A partnership developed thereafter as we put down a couple of very presentable chances and their number 6 did somewhat ride his luck. The remaining opener meanwhile played a good knock hitting the boundary regularly on his way to 47. They got the score past 80 before both were removed by the Nathanator who managed a 13 over spell despite barely being able to walk all week! He ended up with yet another five for as we started to run through their late order. Piri weighed in with a couple which included a fine catch by Keir at mid wicket. Their last pair struck a few lusty blows to get them up to 135 but at the point we were well satisfied to restrict them to that.

Tea wasn’t quite ready so we agreed that 10 overs would be bowled as we turned straight round. However a squally shower meant only a couple were bowled but Arkwright and Two Metre both survived without undue alarms. After tea (which was good quality if lacking a bit in quantity) we set about chasing what looked like a modest total. Andrew gave their opener catching practise from a full toss to give him the first of what turned out to be his 8 victims in a marathon 24 over spell in the 6th over. Off the same bowler Two Metre was the first of three batsman to prod one gently to gully but Harry looked again in good form at the other end. He had made 26 when he gloved one to the keeper who took a juggling catch standing up. At that point we were 48 for 3 but then RJ and JD battled hard to move the score to 80 and we were seemingly well set. Alas we collapsed to 91 for 7 with only RJ not getting out to the opener Khan. 45 still needed but we still had a chance with our long batting line up. VC joined Piri at this point and we managed to get the score to 109 before Piri nicked off. VC followed soon after adjudged LBW and we still needed 26 with the last pair of Keir and Nathan at the crease. These two kept eking out the runs in a tense finish but just as we started to hope (and as we know it’s the hope that kills you!), Keir flicked one to mid wicket where he was well caught by one of their youngsters.

So a gut wrenching defeat by 12 runs and the if onlys and what might have beens start running through the mind. Credit has to go to their bowler who took eight wickets though who bowled remarkably consistently spell and used the extra bounce to good effect. Too many tame dismissals from our point of view but we still have four games to go to start finding those complete performances.

Man of the match has to go to Nathan for his fiver for. Schlong de la Jour? A lack of candidates this week in the 3s so let’s give it to Parker the 2s captain who has been working on Brexit for 3 years but got stuck in France last week!
