Actonians Cricket Club Won by 1

Match report We turned up to Popesfield ready to beat local rivals Ealing. Early concerns about a damp wicket were solved by liberal application of sand, and skipper Katie decided to have a bowl in humid cloudy conditions suited to our quick bowlers.

Sarah and Saoirse opened up, and any worries about our bowlers recovering from the night before were gone when the economical Sarah clean bowled their dangerous opener and was causing their batters all kinds of trouble with her offcutters. Saoirse’s pace was more expensive to their talented opener but bowled Actonians’ least favourite opponent Mia who had not looked comfortable. After a tight first 10, the skipper changed things up, bringing on spin queen Aishah alongside Eva. Aishah’s first was expensive but she then started getting the ball ragging, helped by some beautiful field placements from the captain. Eva used the pressure to take two wickets in consecutive balls - the hattrick ball against a leftie brought a call of “death to left handers” from Sarah Baigent, and though the hattrick ball was avoided the pressure told and Aishah removed the leftie with a ripping off break. Returnee Antonia then replaced Eva and was very unlucky, with multiple edges flying past keeper and the cordon, though spirits were kept high by Aishah’s chirping and some tight fielding. A useful partnership of 40 odd, as the opener passed 50, was finally ended as Anty had enough of the nicks and bowled the stubborn number 7, and Saoirse finally got one on the stumps in her final over for a second wicket. Some excellent death bowling from Eva and Antonia meant that despite their opener reaching her century we had restricted Ealing to a chaseable 160-7. Shoutout to Charlie for an excellent display behind the stumps.

As some innings break research let us find out their opener who made almost 70% of their runs was in fact a South African international, we were even more determined to win. Our opening stalwarts of Katie and Maz walked out and didn’t let their bowlers find rhythm, though Maz was out to an LBW which she claims was edged and outside leg (and probably a no ball and an ineligible bowler for good measure!). Stoic number 3 Keely walked out to support the skip, and a useful partnership formed, helped by a good number of drops (10+ in the innings?) and some lovely boundaries either side of the wicket. Some aggressive running brought some 3s, including one where Keely almost overtook Katie (though I’m required to mention Keely running one of skip’s shots short). Katie was unlucky to be stumped and our own overseas Aoife hit two beautiful shots through cover before slapping a full toss to the only fielder who could catch. Eva came out to up the runrate with some gorgeous shots and trademark aggressive running - once almost running out Keely as revenge for last week. After a speedy 50 partnership got us back on track, Keely had clearly had enough running and got out, bringing out Antonia who looked bright from the off until she was controversially runout - Ealing’s keeper clearly didn’t have the ball in her hands when breaking the stumps. Skip went out to ask them for a Dhoni-like recall of the batter, but Ealing wanted the win more than the spirit. Looking to up the rate, Lucy came in and ran hard but was unluckily runout due to a mistake of communication. This team bats deep and Saoirse came out to up the rate off their increasingly annoyed overseas and to let Eva reach a well deserved match-winning 50. A chipped 2 let As win with 8 balls to spare.

A great performance all round, with tight bowling, strong fielding and excellent batting at the end saw As home. Special mention for some excellent captaincy from Katie and some entertaining chat from Aishah but Eva’s all round performance was deserving of Player of the Match.
