Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v Ealing 4 on Sat 25 May 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 6 wickets
Match report
Well, somebody’s 0 had to go! Both sides came into this game looking for their first win of the season as we took on neighbours Ealing. Their numbers looked a bit light as we approached the start but they ended up with 10 thanks to a good club man who was summoned from their 3s to captain the side. He then went on to the lose the toss and they were thus inserted. Good to see the bowlers limber up before the game and the fielders practice something we didn’t do very well last week. Catching!
We welcomed back Kier for his first trundle of the season and he struck with his 3rd ball when he nipped one back through the gate to bowl their opener. At the other end the skipper found something that has he generally found elusive. Yes, consistency and control of line and length! As a result he put in an extra slip and he was immediately rewarded with a catch taken there by Kier to get rid of the other opener. Their next three batsman all looked to be capable and looked to play some shots. Nathan got their number 3 to attempt an ambitious drive which was well caught by Mike at mid on. That left them 28 for 3 and a partnership then started to develop but with the score on 58 2 Metre held on to a straightforward chance at mid off. The change bowlers, Lord Whear and “Brian Lara” Croft, came on and kept up the pressure and they duly polished off the innings to leave us chasing 98 for the win.
We had to face 15 overs before tea so Arkwright and 2 Metre Charlie were soon out in the middle. Both their opening bowlers sent down some testing deliveries but they did lack a bit of consistency. However the score had reached 22 when Andrew somehow missed a loopy high full toss. If only we had sightscreens..........!! Charlie nicked off soon after and when H played on, we found ourselves 34 for 3. Umm.....food for thought. Well tea was looming and ideally we would have liked to get there without further loss. Sam and Mike looked settled despite the former copping one on the side of the eye when their opening bowler went round the wicket and dug one in short. Thankfully he was ok and a helmet was summoned. Ealing brought a new bowler the over before tea and first up a half tracker pie was served up. Sam somehow picked out the only fielder saving one on the leg side. Sahil ( who we must stress was promoted up the order and was not a teawatchman!) then had to face the remaining 5 balls and this he did with aplomb scoring 10 runs. We therefore went to tea on 70 for 4.
After last weeks carbfest at Osterley we were presented with a fine tea by the skipper. Sahil and Mike then went out and knocked off the remaining runs in under 5 overs. Mike hit a six to complete the match and it was back to the club to watch the first team.
Difficult to pick a man of the match but Mikes knock just takes it when the chase could have turned into a nervy one. All the bowlers contributed though and that bodes well for the coming weeks. Schlong de la Jour? No Aneeq this week so it was an opportunity for someone to take the “glory”. Step forward Andrew Maben for failing to utilise the shiny new sightscreens to good effect! Onwards to Highgate next week as the 3s look for further upwards movement in the table.
