Actonians Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report Wanted: A wicket keeper called Andy, who loves a middle order nurdle and whose best cricket days are definitely behind him without it being clear when exactly they were to write vaguely amusing match reports…

Cometh the hour, cometh the nurdler!

Hello everyone! With Spinksy’s demise* I am writing the first match reports of the season and our first match felt like a distinctly unfours affair.

We were admittedly the hot favourites for our opening fixture after an unprecedented winning streak last summer had seen us miss out on promotion by [obligatory Kiwi voice] the barest of margins. Ealing on the other hand had only mustered 13 points last season. However, it’s a long winter and who knows what a change in league might mean for them.

In fact it meant them winning a toss, having a bat and coming up against a catching performance that made you believe we were still in the Gupta imperial phase. An absolute screamer by H set the ball rolling and then decent grabs by me and Nathan mean a tight opening spell had left Ealing in all kinds of trouble, three down without reaching double figures. However, to quote the timeless wisdom of the Persian Suffi tradition: “this too will pass”, and the drops came at regular intervals as Ealing began to drag themselves out of the mire.

This is when we needed some inspiration and it came from places old and new. Kit bowled a spell of pace and control which screamed “Roheet will pretend he was lucky to stop Luke stealing him in the 3s” and the Lord Whear proved that form is temporary but dibbly dobbling consistency is permanent. The card also suggests that RJ got a wicket which I have no recollection of but I’m sure it was a peach. Regular strikes and a refusal of their number 11 to even play meant that we had restricted them to just 107, a score that even on a wet Boddington looked below par.

The skipper sent us out with instructions to build a platform to allow our powerful middle order to express themselves and to everyone’s genuine astonishment that is what actually happened. Ben and Robbo got us off to a steady start and Rakesh and I continued to knock the ball around and keep the board going. Once he was tired of running ones and twos Rakesh decided he had had enough and finished the game in a hurry in a display that can only be described as peak Rakesh. He brought up his fifty and finished the game with some mighty blows.

A game that basically went to the form book and the only blemish on a pretty professional display was some shonky catching. Onto the Tigers!

*Andy Spinks is not dead, just playing cricket outside the M25, which is much the same.
