Match report "The despair I can take it's the hope that kills you"

'I can take the despair. It's the hope that kills you.' - Brian Stimpson (John Cleese), 'Clockwise'

We arrived at Harrow Town in beaming sunshine full of expectation that we would finally get to complete a game of league cricket at the third time of asking. Short boundaries, a rock hard batting surface and a quite significant slope in the outfield convinced captain Will that we would quite happily chase whatever we were set and so after winning the toss we inserted Harrow.

A glance at the team sheet showed an embarrassment of riches with at least 6 frontline bowlers and genuine batting options down to 9. We were full of hope and expectation of our first win of the season. And we got off to a flyer of a start with Dave Whear inducing their handy looking left handed opener to chop on.

The bowlers collectively stuck manfully to their task. Highlighted by the fact that the opposition had asked us to play ODI style leg side wide rules and after we agreed we only bowled five or six during the entire innings compared to the 59 innings extras that they went on to concede.

The Harrow town innings proceeded to demonstrate the true nature of the pitch and the short boundaries. Any shot that beat the infield was inevitably four and despite some wonderfully disciplined and canny middle overs bowling from Taz (39/2), Will (37/3) and Smithy (34/1) we were facing a steadily escalating total. By the time that Aneeq finished off the innings we had bowled Harrow out for 222. A daunting looking total most weeks but one that at tea both teams thought was slightly below par. Hope sprung external amongst the sandwiches for the A's.

Our opening stand demonstrated the futility of 1.believing in yourself and 2.making yourself your fantasy captain as I cost myself minus 40 fantasy points by contriving to miss a ball heading down the leg side which managed to hit my back thigh pad and then the stumps. A period of consolidation was needed and that's exactly what Bobby and Rodger delivered. A 50 run stand putting us in great shape at the first drinks break of the innings.

That's when hope began to turn towards despair. A series of poor dismissals saw us slump from 58-1 to 65-5. 222 began to feel a very long way away. Up stepped the vice captain (47) to play a gritty innings that became increasingly fluent as the score ticked upwards and our capricious friend hope reappeared. When the captain joined the party, ably assisted by extras (59 not out), we had scrapped our way to 209-7.

Harrow looked like a broken team down on their haunches at the drinks break and the game seemingly at our mercy. We had graduated beyond hope towards the heady feeling of expectation. The details of our rapid transition back past hope and back towards despair involve some inspired bowling from Harrow Towns high quality opening bowler as the last 3 wickets fell for 4 runs and we were all out for 212.

In the final analysis the game was lost for us in two spells where we lost 4 wickets for 6 after the first drinks break and 3 wickets for 4 after the second. Many a slip between lip and cup cost us 10 points and our first non concession victory of the season.
