It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Duncan “Tree Beard” Slaughter, passed away at home peacefully yesterday morning, with his wife, Dawn, by his side. He had been ill for a very short space of time.
Duncan was a towering figure at the club in all senses of the word. In over 40 years as a player, umpire, captain, coach to the juniors and latterly as President, his contribution to Old Actonians Cricket Club was immense.
His last duty was attending President’s Day on the 15th August where, at his insistence, the day was dedicated to the Ruth Strauss Foundation which raised over £1300. His herculean effort in attending was a measure of his resilience and inner strength which in itself was a measure of his love of the club.
A founder member of the “Grumpy Old Men’s Club”, our trips away will never be the same, and his wisdom, knowledge, deep sense of humour and occasional mischief, will be sadly missed by all.
