Match report Long innings not enough for Old As 2nd XI

Another overcast day saw the 2nds take on local rivals Perivale Phoenicians (or Phonecians as Ali keeps reporting).

The As were put into bat on what looked a solid wicket, with a couple of damp patches which were set to dry up as the match progressed.

As started cautiously, with the first runs off the bat coming on the last ball of the second over. Arjuna Upasena and Andrew Maben saw the shine of the new ball well, taking care to avoid loose shots and wait for the bad balls.

Arjuna was the first to fall, victim to a short ball which held up on the pitch. In form, Dominic Wallace took his place and immediately started to assert himself, striking two glorious boundaries in quick succession, while Maben was happy to bide his time at the other end, capitalising on lapses in the field to notch up his personal tally.

Unfortunately, Wallace was the next to be dismissed, bringing Ali Slaughter to the crease. Slaughter and Maben enjoyed a 10 over partnership for 29 until Maben was bowled, playing around a delivery from Perivale's first change bowler. This brought Rob Long to the middle.

After the skipper fell for 19, skying a drive to mid off, Long was joined by Duncan Slaughter. A steady partnership with greater Slaughter allowed Long to start building his innings which would see him overcome the middle order jitters to make 47 before he ran out of overs. After losing Slaughter, Nawroz and Shaun Qamar, he was helped along the way by Anthony Carlos' aggressive 25 and some rear guard action from Piradeepan and Asad Hussain.

The As finished on 153 from the full 55 overs permitted.

After another filling tea from Sandy's kitchen, the Axemen took the field for Perivale's innings. Shaun Qamar again bowled impressively, holding up the runs from one end while Piri attacked at the other. Shaun was very unlucky not to have a wicket when the ball passed between bat and batsman and clipped the bail, only for it to stay on. To add further insult to injury, the ball carried on its way to the boundary for 4 byes.

This event somewhat echoed Old As luck in the field as a few edges from both ends evaded fielders and travelled to the boundary. Shaun Qamar was almost involved in the first wicket again but was unable to hold a swirling change from a mistimed pull off Piri.

The first breakthrough, came courtesy of Nawroz who forced an edge from the opener, Mian, which was acrobatically snaffled by Anthony Carlos. Qamar was also able to get into the action when the other opener lofted a drive to him at mid off, from the bowling of Carlos.

Wickets were then hard to come by as pinch hitting number three, Francis, started to lay into the bowling. He racked up 41 fairly quickly to put Perivale in control and even after he fell to some tight bowling from the greater Slaughter, the good guys had a tough challenge ahead of them.

Piri was able to claim a clean bowled with the score at 137 but this was not enough to subdue to the visitor's attack and they managed to reach the target with 3 overs remaining.

It was again a tough day for the As but the signs of improvement were showing. Hopefully the match up against Crouch End next week will see the team pull together its assets to give a truer representation of the abilities within the side.

Man of the match went to Rob Long for his well constructed 47.
