Match report Another Long Innings Helps 2s to Draw

Rob Long was aided capably by a confident lower order as the Old As twos held off the bowlers of Crouch End to secure a losing draw.

After winning the toss, Old As decided to bowl on what looked a track which would dry out in the fine weather.

Nawroz Arghandabi and Piri Sivanathan opened up with the former making fast inroads into the Crouch End batting. He had the opener, Darren Mathura caught at slip by Duncan Slaughter without scoring and almost had the other opener the same way but the catch managed to evade Slaughter this time and Steve Ross was allowed to continue.

The partnership of the game came between Ross and number four Jay Metha, who scored 38 and 101 respectively. Both were going at the bowling agressively, until a change in the bowling brought Asad Hussain into the attack.

Deceived and tied down by the web Hussain was spinning down the hill, Ross attempted to take on Shaun but was felled by one which beat him down the leg side, shattering the stumps.

Mehta continued to be bamboozled by Hussains wiley turners, sending a chance back to Hussain and one to skipper, Ali Slaughter, at short leg during his innings. He was unlucky not to claim a wicket in his 8 overs as he seemed to be beating the batsmen all ends up.

Slaughter however found more luck when a cunningly slow half tracker trapped Syed Shah in front after drinks. Wickets also came for Anthony Carlos (his man caught again by Shaun at long off, for the second week running. Another highlight being his Brett Lee style attack of 'hit 'em in the head then break their toes' which softened up the former bat for Piri) and Duncan Slaughter (plumb LBW of Dave Jenkins). Piri had the most success with a total of three wickets falling to his bowling.

Crouch End declared on 247 for 8 from 50, and after a superb tea featuring hot fresh cooked chicken and onion bhajis (a cullinary highlight of the season so far) Old Actonians' openers Raj Puranik and Duncan Slaughter took the crease.

The innings started quickly with both batsmen finding the boundary early on. Slaughter looked set to demolish the bowling, cutting and pulling boundaries in quick succession, however he was undone by a low bouncer (a curse of the Crouch End slope) and was caught at long off.

This brought Ali 'the lesser' Slaughter to the crease and he and Puranik were able to bring the As into the 30s before Slaughter nicked off to Shasha Rhuden. Nawroz enjoyed a similar score before he cut young off spinner Dilan Wanniarachchi to point.

Star bat of last week, Rob Long again made the most of his chance to bat, sticking in the middle for the majority of the innings, and amounting 33 in the 28 overs he was in the middle. At the start of his innings, he made the most of the bad deliveries, cutting boundaries up the hill effortlessly. However, after Puranik departed for 30 (the second of three to be caught at long off), he was forced to play with more reserve and see the team through the allotted overs.

Anthony Carlos batted with him well, showing some shots of his own to punish anything wayward. However, he made himself the third of the long off trio in the 45th over.

After Long finally fell to the spinner, Wanniarachchi, (4-43 from his 17 consecutive overs) it was left to nine and ten, Shaun Qamar and Piri Sivanathan to bat out the remaining 5 overs.

The two combined perfectly to hold out the attack of 4 different bowlers in overs 45-50 and having survived the first five balls of the 50th over, he decided to take on the last ball... or so he thought.

After carting the bowler for a boundary, Qamar was swiftly informed by the umpires that, due to a quick over rate in the last hour, he had one more over to face. The recently relaxed muscles in the OA's side quickly tensed again as Piri was set to face the next six balls.

He was not made to face all six however as a low edge ran past the keeper allowing Qamar to streak down the pitch for the final three deliveries. At this point, the banter from the close fielders (all ten of them) and the bowler was becoming uproarious but Qamar kept his mood cool and pushed back the following two deliveries.

'Do, something interesting and hit a six' was apparently what the short leg said to him during the over. In fact, the same short leg that was seen splayed on the floor, rueing his words a ball later when Shaun, not wanting to disappoint, followed his advice and sent the (final) final ball sailing over the square leg boundary.

It was a hard fought draw from the A's lower order and the team showed real resiliance to take the match to the end.

Man of the match went to Rob Long for again showing the northern grit to recommence an innings. Notable mentions to Raj for his 30, Piri for his 3 wickets and Asad for a tight 8 overs for 24, with bad luck witholding his wicket.
