Match report We were put in to field on a blustery day. Early success for Sarah Baigent in her first over had Wanstead on 9 for 1 after the second over. This brought Mel Leach to the crease, and she stayed there until she was run out on the last ball. Probably a bit tired after scoring 127! Excellent fielding from Sacha Parkinson, Reshma Garrera and Lucy Davies on the leg side kept her score down with good work from Cath Goold and keeper Oclevia Poynter to run her out. However, even though she was batting well from one end, Old Actonians did not give up. Wickets fell at regular intervals, to Kiran Baluch, Shaiza Khan and Lucy Davies. Wanstead scored 199, a big target with the rain beginning to fall.
The rain fell steadily during our batting. The wet outfield held the ball up, to the disadvantage of openers Kiran Baluch and Shaiza Khan. So many shots should have been 4’s, but stopped short in the wet grass. Kiran scored 28 and Shaiza 29, and an opening partnership of 47 was just what we needed to attack the high target. Sarah Baigent came in and continued the powerful hitting, matching Kiran’s score of 28. Katie Davies came in to hit a quickfire 44 off the last 6 overs, but the target of 199 was too great. Katie’s batting helped us achieve maximum batting points, and left us all with a “what if the outfield had stayed dry” feeling.
They may have been champions for the last 2 years, but we know we can win the return on 21st July.
Big thanks to Carlene for interrupting a family day to drive across London to make sure we had 11 players, and thanks to Kevin and Jennifer for umpiring and scoring. Hope you have dried out and thawed out !!!!!
No ladies match next week. Our next match is home to Hampstead on Sunday 26th May. Hope there is good availability and here’s to another victory
