Scorecard

Highgate v Actonians Cricket Club Club XI on Sat 27 Apr 2013 at 1.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 21 runs

Match report 'Club' was definitely the right description in terms of this team; two twos (one one legged), two threes, three fours and three new players made up the As 10 and each represented their sides well.

Jon Hawkins and Hrishikesh Puranik opened for the As and did well to see some of the shine off the ball before Hawkins was sent back in the second over. This brought new man Daniel Blackett to the crease. Wielding an unconventional style, Blackett looked relaxed as he played and he kept Puranik company well while the scoreboard ticked over, until a change in bowling brought about his dismissal: reaching for a wide one, he played onto his own stumps. Mick Payne, sporting a great wrestling handle and t-shirt to match, supported Hrishi well to his 50 before he too started to attack the bowling. The two slogged, sniped and pulled to push up the run rate with Hrishi eventually falling for 82 only a few overs after getting his 50. Mick continued to impress, accompanied by Duncan Slaughter at first and then briefly alongside Ali Slaughter. The latter enjoyed a brief cameo of 18. As finished on 191/6 from their 35 overs.

After a light tea, As took the field with Azeem Mohammed and Roheet Gupta opening the bowling. Azeem took a wicket in his 4th over, but he was lucky, as Daniel, running backwards, managed to palm the ball up with his right hand, parry it with his left and just about held on with his right after the elaborate juggling display. Shortly after, Roheet snatched a cheeky run out after the number 3 pushed the opener a bit to hard and Mick whipped the bails off. The wickets dried up for a bit after that as the 3rd and 4th batsmen enjoyed a useful partnership. Jon Hawkins made his best attempt to take a catch off Bob Coutts, leaping horizontally like a salmon, only for the ball to drop two feet short of him. It took the return of man of the hour Hrishi to break the partnership as the number four skipped past his first delivery and was stumped by Mick's quick hands. Hrishi then enjoyed a spell of 4 wickets for 3 runs from his 5 overs, including an LBW, and two clean bowled dismissals. Two wickets then fell to run outs from Duncan Slaughter and Humza Rabbani respectively. Despite this, an interesting ending was set up as Highgate needed 20 from the final two overs. Humza and Jon Hawkins combined to take the final wicket however, the latter taking a good catch at square leg.
