Wembley 5 v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 12 Jul 2014 at 1.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report The 4’s looked to back up the previous week’s win, and complete a double over Wembley as they travelled to Vale Farm Park. Though hampered by traffic, and poor directions, all eventually made it there to find Chetan had won the toss and elected to field in the Skipper’s absence.

The returning Tushar Pathak and Chetan opened the bowling and Tushar in particular settled on excellent lines and lengths. The introduction of Bob Coutts brought about the first wicket as Wembley looked to move on from a relatively slow start. Wembley’s 13 year old Patel looked an excellent prospect and well organised, but fell to Tushar for 15. Almost immediately afterwards a further quick wicket for Bob left Wembley 30-odd for 3, before Roheet replaced Tushar and picked up 2 cheap wickets to leave Wembley in deep trouble at 50 for 5. The Wembley no.5 Ahmad had different ideas and struck the ball cleanly and defended solidly as he made his way to an excellent 50. The problem for Wembley was that wickets continued to tumble at the other end driving Ahmad to increasingly dangerous shot making. Andy Grant picked up 2 wickets and could have had a hatful on another day from a track providing assistance to spinners. Tushar returned for a second spell which finished off Wembley showing excellent stamina in his second burst in hot conditions. The 129 Wembley scored was always underpar on an excellent wicket.

In reply Bilal and Aneek provided excellent impetus to the innings, before Billy was cleaned up driving. Tom Whear came out to join Aneek and mainly looked on as the ball disappeared to the boundary (mainly it must be said to the one on the legside). After reaching 45, checking his score and surviving a simple dropped catch, Aneek blasted a flat drive and stood ready to receive acclaim ……only to see long off stick out one hand and pluck the ball from the air. After such drama the pace of scoring slowed as Garner and Whear steadily accumulated. Garner fell in slightly comical fashion caught behind off the not so express Alford. This left Whear to continue steady accumulation with Masterton who was returning from injury. Both looked untroubled as the 4’s chase steadily closed in on the target, and in Whear’s presence there was never going to be any of the drama or a collapse that the 4’s are famous for. Whear eventually fell with the 4’s only 10 short which Roger knocked off without Chetan even having to face a ball.

This was an excellent performance all round. All three aspects of the game came off for the 4s, with Tushar’s bowling in the heat probably the pick of the performances. Collectively the batting also stepped up with Aneek’s pyrotechnics and Tom Whear really solidifying that top order. Fielding was exemplary.
