Actonians Cricket Club Womens 1st XI v Wanstead Ladies on Sun 17 Jul 2016 at 1.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost

Match report The sun was out and it seemed the perfect day for a game of cricket. The ladies arrived at the club to find the refs room key was nearly at Barns CC in Jacks' pocket (DotD for the rest of the season?). As we sat on the balcony applying sunscreen in our flipflops (jandals/thongs - whatever you want to call them), waiting for the key to arrive, we were called out to run the covers on as we were treated to a short but heavy downpour. Reshma won the toss elected to field first as the key arrived in just enough time for a short warm up. Our warm up consisted of running the covers back on to protect the wicket from yet another short shower.

Finally the game got underway. A shortage of bowlers meant we opened with Reshma and Edna. The opening Wanstead batswomen had had a poor performance for her respective county side the previous day and was not going to let that ruin her weekend as she aggressively hit the ball too the boundary, encouraging Wanstead to tweeted 'it's raining boundaries here...'. It wasn't the start we wanted with the first over going for 17 runs. We kept working hard in the field moving fielders to the correct areas but she just managed to get the ball over them. We set the field defensively putting fielders out on the boundary early on forcing them to work for their runs. We didn't bowl badly and our fielding was good, not many got through us, but their run rate was rapidly increasing. Edna took the first wicket of the game in the 8th over, a ball to beat the young opener. The incoming batters where all looking to maximise on the short boundary and were hitting the ball hard. Rebecca joined the bowling attack and took her first wicket for the ladies and it was the one we needed! At 15 overs they were 124, we knew then it was going to be a big score. Amy and Katie did well covering the boundary between deep square leg and cow corner, Amy taking a low catch at deep square leg to see off the Wanstead captain. Wickets continued to fall, Reshma taking her second as she bowled the Wanstead keeper, another big hitter. Amy came onto bowl for the first time this season and bowled their top scorer, followed by a lovely calm catch by Edna at mid wicket giving Amy her second wicket. We continued to work hard in the field, stopping them doubling their score in the second part of their innings, they set a target of 223 for us to chase.

It was a big score and with only one of our usual openers it was going to be a challenge. Rebecca was joined in the middle by Katie to open for us. They both played well, having to run hard as they struggled to find the boundary. They where looking comfortable until the 7th over where Katie was caught out. Rebecca played a sensible innings as wickets continued to fall around her until being bowled in the 21st over scoring 51. Reshma went in as John Walker went to get a drink from the bar and beat him back to the sidelines, seeing all of 2 balls. We were 85 for 6 in the 21th over, yet remained positive and continued to work for those batting points. Debbie settled in quickly, hitting a few boundaries and was joined by Katy in the middle, who hit her first 4 for the season on her first ball, a lovely shot beating the fine leg fielder. They both batted well getting our score upto 114 in the 30 overs, Debbie finishing on 20 n.o.

Wanstead had a strong batting line up, who all batted well. There are lots of positives to take from the game. We only gave away 9 extras, there where no byes, and we continued to work hard in the field stopping boundaries. We worked hard right until the end, it just wasn't our day. We had 3 players playing their first ladies league game of the season and nearly everyone playing out of their usual positions.

Thank you to Jennifer for scoring and teas, Richard for filling in to umpire last minute, Marcus and Paul for helping with running the covers on (the first time) and those who made it to cheer from the sidelines.
