Indian Gymkhana 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 06 May 2017 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 3 wickets

Match report The 3s kicked off their league campaign with a trip to Vale Farm to play Gymkhana thankful that we did not have visit their usual Stalag that is Boston Manor Playing Fields. Everyone arrived in good time with the skipper donning the now mandatory Kiwi "uniform" of shorts and flip flops! No wonder the sun was reluctant to make an appearance. This season has seen the introduction of a split format with half overs games and half timed. This being a 45 overs a side match meant the toss was not as important as before but nonetheless, Nathan lost it anyway and we were invited to wield the willow first.

Mabel Senior opened up with the Chairman and it became apparent that the wicket was not going to be that easy to score off. A bit 2 paced with the odd one skidding through. Andrew got bowled by one that kept a bit low and Charlie Price and Shahid both followed quickly to leave us on 28 for 3 in the 9th over. Walter then joined Lord Wear and helped steady the ship but he too got out when seemingly well set. Next in was Shabeel who set his stall out from the start to bat time and curb his attacking instincts. This pair took the score to 97 before Sir David got a leading edge and offered a simple catch when poised for the 1st half century of the season.

Piri and Shabeel then put together a fine partnership of 64 that gave the innings a bit of impetus and took advantage of some pretty modest fielding by the opposition. In fact we gained overthrows from 3 balls in a row! We subsequently huffed and puffed our way to 182 which was a decent total bearing in mind the pitch and some decent consistent bowling by IG.

After an ok tea (where there was no actual tea) we took to the field with a modicum of optimism and an armoury of medium pacers! Not the worst wicket to be loaded with Dobbers but we knew IG would bat with their usual positive manner and that could play into our hands. That said our old mate Onkar came out to umpire so DRS would have been handy! Nathan opened up with Piri and it was the latter who impressed taking 4 good wickets, all bowled, to leave the game finely poised. Their opener was playing well though and when their number 6 came in and started hitting us to all parts the game was starting to drift from the As. Then the Right Honourable David Wear came on to bowl and got the breakthrough and with Walter snaring their opener for his first wicket for the club we sniffed an opportunity. However their skipper saw them home despite our best efforts.

An opening defeat it was then but at least we picked up 1 point for taking 7 wickets. A good number of positives though. Good knocks from the Chairman and Shabeel, very good all round performance from Piri, and Nathan has only gone a got a 2nd date! Also Charlie and Walter both look like being good additions to the club. Roll on next week.........
