North London 4 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 15 Jul 2017 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 7 wickets
Match report
Buoyed by their win over IG, the 3s headed up to Highgate to take on North London on their small but perfectly formed 2nd ground. A couple of changes to the selected side saw Alex Shaw coming in for his 3s debut and 2 Metre Charlie coming back in with the late elevation of Lord Whear. Nathan won yet another toss and with drizzle falling from grey laden skies, opting to put them in was a straightforward decision.
The skipper took the new ball with Piri and they were confronted with a right handed opener who looked solid and pounced on anything loose and a left handed who was all swing and no ding outside off stump. Eventually the latter fell to Piri to a catch by Alex who had been moved from gully to 3rd slip the ball before! North London's skipper came in at 3 keen to get on with it and the score raced up to 59 in the 15th over. However Piri struck again when TP held a sharp catch over his head to send their captain back. At 82 for 2 in the 20th over North London seemed set to post a decent score but then the Kiwi Man Mountain, Vaughan, entered the fray. In tandem with young Tim Wallace, they tore through their batting. Vaughan picked up another 5 with the help of 2 fine low catches by Tim at cover. Tim himself picked up 3 of his own as we rolled them over for a modest 155. Spare a thought for their opener though who ended up carrying his bat for a well made 87. He never looked in any real trouble and his innings put the pitch in perspective.
Maben Senior and 2 Metre Charlie were sent in to set the tone. It's fair to say opening partnerships this season have not allowed our number 3 batsmen to put their feet up for long with the highest before this game being 27 and that was last week! However that was to change today as Charlie smoked some glorious boundaries off front and back foot. Andrew also took advantage of anything loose and they were not separated until the 18th over with 83 on the board. It needed a run out too as Charlie's dodgy back prevented a bat slide that would have kept him in. Still an innings of 46 that set us on our way. Alex went in at 3 but was out to a fine one handed catch at short cover but Abhay came in at 4 and struck some effortless boundaries to reassert our superiority. Andrew brought up his 3rd half century of the season before getting out. This gave Chas a chance of a little cameo as he hit his first 2 balls for 4. Presumably he was in a hurry because he had an "appointment " with his personal physician?!!
The win was duly completed in the 30th over and the 3s had clinched their 6th win of the season. Excellent bowling backed up by good fielding with a solid batting performance. Even Sir Geoffrey would have trouble finding fault with that performance. Good criiiiicket! Up next leaders Hampstead who will provide a stern test.
Schlong de la Jour will have to go to the skipper whose optimistic attempt to throw the ball back to the adjoining Highgate ground was quite frankly ridiculous! With a 6ft fence to carry 60 yards away he thought he had a chance? Get on the weights!!
