Actonians Cricket Club Womens 1st XI v Hampstead Ladies on Sun 08 Jul 2018 at 1.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
With another too hot day to play cricket Reshma won the toss for the 3rd time in a row (definitely an A's skipper record!) and we elected to bat. Nancy making her debut opening up with Katie. Hampstead opened up with 2 good openers who got it swinging but they started off well knocking around the singles. A decision of NO given by their umpire didn't go down well in the Hampstead team but the batters carried on. The pitch was definitely not one that we wish to use again with its awful variation. Nancy got a bouncer as well as a little later a ball to the nose after it managed to squeeze through her grill. Pushing on, both batted hitting the bad balls when they came. At drinks we were 69-0. Unfortunately, in the over after drinks Nancy (38) fell being stumped by a floating ball and in came Alex. A great opening bat from Nancy especially with it being her first game for A's. Alex and Katie batted well together. Lots of singles as they had their field pushed right out which was annoying. With it getting hotter Katie decided to just give catching practice to the outfield but they decided they didn't actually want to take them. The second drinks break we were 130-1. Similar to the first break Katie fell (76) with the oppo finally taking a catch (after about 4 attempts). Lucy came to the crease with her new and improved PINK grip (very exciting). Unluckily Lucy fell for LBW and in came Amy for her first game of the season. Both knocked it round until Alex went for a hard earned 22. Amy and Resh at the crease with lots of running then saw Amy also get caught. Another first gamer Camille got to come out and bat before Resh also fell to a catch. Debbie had a flying visit to the crease but unfortunately saw the return of the opener Jade. Camille and Emma saw out the game to 172-7 ending up on 3 and 7 respectively. A decent total for such an obscure pitch.
After tea we went out to field with Alex and Camille opening up. A brilliant first 10 overs bowled by these 2 with so many close shavings with the stumps. The breakthrough first came in the 10th over from Camille where Debbie took her first insane catch of the day. Off the bat onto the pads into the safe hands of Debbie. They were 39-1. Change in bowling saw Lucy come on and take a brilliant wicket in her first over. Bowl at the batsmen feet is what you're told to aim for or in Lucy's case at the feet but either way plum she was gone. 41-2 off 11. Lucy striked again in her second over, making the batsmen hit it straight up for a slow mo catch taken by Alex. Her figures 2-2 after those 2 overs. In between wickets saw some impressive fielding, or theatrical fielding from Sally and her early 'diving', not at all slipping over. I mean it looked impressive so that's all that matters! Emma came on for Camille after and similarly with an immense catch from Emily saw Emma get a wicket. Unfortunately, this next partnership was hard to break. We saw Emily come on to bowl as well as Katy and Resh. With some bottom hand batting it wasn't looking good. However, we never gave up and everyone was putting in 100% effort and making sure the standard was high. The breakthrough did come from a brilliant dream team combo of Katy O and Debbie. Batsmen late pull shot not good enough to get past Debbie and those safe hands. I am still unsure how Debbie took it but it was insane and Katy had a deserved wicket. Hampstead did get the total but not before some tight bowling from Alex and 'presh' from Resh. Alex was so close with so many but it wasn't to be, even if she did run into Lucy fall over and they got a run in the process (fine will come next week)! It was quite funny to watch it happen though. We did lose by 5 wickets but we can take so much away from the game as we played it in the true spirit of the game. Everyone had a notable performance at some point. We are a team; we win together and lose together. Positive is that it improved the fines pot!!
