Enfield 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 25 Aug 2018 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 9 wickets
Match report
With survival in Division 1 secure the 3s made the trip to the Holtwhites Trinibis ground to play relegated Enfield. A pity on 2 fronts as the ground is one of the best away venues we play at and Enfield are invariably a young team who play the game in the right spirit. Anyway the oppo won the toss and elected to bat first. Greg, making his 3s debut, took the new ball with Piri and he got the ball through at a decent lick. Once he finished testing the VCs ability to take away swingers in front of 2nd slip he gave the openers a testing time. He duly struck when he persuaded their skipper to play a loose drive to 2 Metre at mid off having got one to lift chest high the previous ball. Piri got the number 3 out in identical fashion for a duck and that was a key wicket as he looked very good scoring 70 against us last time. A partnership then developed as 2 good young batsman started to get them into a decent position. By now the 2 Tommy’s were on in the guise of the Wizard of Worcester and Lord Whear Junior. The Wizard settled into a decent line and length (its true I’m telling you!) until he decided to bowl a quicker one and the resulting over waist full toss just evaded the batsman but not VCs elbow! Enfield seemed to be getting themselves into a good position to have a right go in the closing overs but wickets fell at regular intervals with all 7 bowlers used picking up at least 1 wicket. They ended up with a round 160 which on a good pitch was very gettable if we batted sensibly.
After a very good tea we opened up with the returning 2 Metre and Lord Whear. Bit of an odd couple but it maintained the left hand right hand combination that frustrates bowlers and slows over rates! Enfield’s opening bowlers both bowled well and were unlucky not to gain more reward than the solitary wicket. The Chairman played round one with the score on 40 which brought in the mercurial Shabby Shabeel in the 11th over. He quickly put the pitch in perspective with a couple of early boundaries and yes there were one or two customary airy fairy drives but overall this was to prove an innings befitting of his abilities. At the other end Charlie did look a bit rusty early on after 2 weeks off but he continued his fine season with an unbeaten half century. Shabeel ended up 78 not out (not 67 as I recounted his score!) and the end came in a hurry as 60 runs came off the final 7.2 overs.
A comfortable win then but we did bowl and field well and the 3 guys who batted did what they had to do with Shabeel taking the man of the match honours.
Schlong de la Jour? Giving it to the Wizard for missing his length by about 10 yards when bowling his quicker ball and making me having to do everything with my right hand for the past 2 days!
One more game to go then as we welcome Crouch End to Boddingtons. Let’s try and taste victory once more before we taste the botulism at the GOM barbecue!
