Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI v North London 4 on Sat 11 May 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 4 wickets
Match report
New season but same first game opponents in the shape of North London. We arrived at Boddingtons to find new sight screens albeit one with a wheel off due to a lack of bolts. Luckily we had Shaun on hand to use some ingenuity in the form of twigs and we were good to go. The oppos captain called correctly and we were unsurprisingly invited to bat first on a wicket that had plenty of grass. Andrew (whose Jag has to be regarded as the clubs pimpmobile) opened with new boy Jordan and the 1st ball of the season saw a Maben cover drive for four. 11 off the first over, happy days. However that’s kind of as good as it got for us with the bat as Andrew spooned one in the next over to mid off. This brought another newbie Sam Hainsworth to the middle but in these testing conditions we managed to lose 3 wickets in 3 balls (over 2 different overs) to leave us 16 for 4. Vish and Aneeq set about rebuilding from the ruins and to some extent they did get us going. Vish hit some pleasant drives while Aneeq hit some boundaries the purist would look less admiringly at. They all count! However we then continued to spoon up catches to the extra cover to mid off arc and we were greatful to a great knock by Sahil, complete with lovely coiffured hair, who showed how much his batting has improved by being far more canny than the rest of us in terms of shot selection. 113 all out but on that pitch it was some sort of total to bowl at.
We opened up with big Vaughan steaming in down the slope and young Sam Boughton. The left hand right hand combination saw Vaughan struggling with his line so Shaun was called into the attack in the 7th over. He duly removes their young opener and with Sam getting their skipper to nick off to the VC we were getting a foothold in this game. Sahil came in and slotted into a nice rhythm and we were at least making North London work for their runs. However we did put down a couple of catches and missed a run out chance ( we will gloss over that one!) that could have really set their panic button going. A few lusty blows by their number 7 and that saw them home.
It doesn’t take an Einstein or a Nick Clark to work out where it went wrong but a lot of positives to take on from here. In Sam and Jordan the club has acquired 2 good lads and our bowling and fielding were generally very good. Bit thanks to Vaughan for helping us out this week. Man of the match has to be Sahil for his all round performance. Closely followed by Shaun who somehow bowled his 12 overs in one spell despite fasting. Great effort. Schlong de la Jour goes to Aneeq for claiming his dropped catch didn’t carry! It just did although it wasn’t easy and he did redeem himself with a sharp snaffle later in the innings. Onwards to next week when the skipper will return for the trip to Osterley.
