Match was Drawn Losing draw

Match report After 3 wins on the trot the 3s went into this home game against Perivale Phoenicians in fine spirits. As we approached the start time the oppo were only numbering 5 so on winning the toss they were obliged to bat first. They eventually managed to get a full compliment and after a delayed start late call up Kier (who was at the wrong ground for the 4th team game thanks to bad Oxbridge admin) and the skipper took the new ball. How was Kier’s length this week? Well let’s just say he gave it every chance to swing! At the other end though Muffin Top Mehaffy found a probing line and length (this is becoming a regular occurrence now). He won 2 leg before decisions to apply some early pressure but credit to their number 3 for sticking around and anchoring their innings. Tushar and Shaun tookover and the latter started by bowling 21 dot balls in a row! Tushar picked up the 3rd wicket thanks to a Rakesh catch in the covers but then came the partnership that got Perivale up to a handy total. The number 5 didn’t look convincing to start with but his block and whack tactics reaped dividends as regular boundaries enabled a partnership of over 90. Thankfully Golden Arm Sahil the “AsSasan” came charging down the hill to roll over both set batsman and cleaned up the tail where there was little resistance. The skipper nipped in with another one but it was another 5 for Sahil. This included a stunning catch by 2 Metre when their number 8 played a decent shot over extra cover only for Charlie to come round from mid off and use that albatross like reach to pluck one from the sky with his right hand. Catch of the season contender for sure.

So in the end we were quite pleased to get them out for 185 but it would still take some getting on this Boddington pitch. Boosted by our first Karen tea of the season, the old firm were sent out to set the foundations. However as you can see from the scorecard we were never in it. Their opening bowler down the slope had a slinky but effective action who kept attacking the stumps. Extras proved to be our top scorer by some margin and we got away with a losing draw thanks to the weather which resulted in a loss of overs. In fact we were 9 down before the last rain break and Shaun and Kier did a great job on the resumption to see out the last 4 overs without real alarm.

A disappointing performance against a side who pretty much only had 5 cricketers and the rest making up the numbers. On reflection we did bowl too many poor balls on a pitch that offered all sorts of assistance.

Sahil has to take the man of the match honours for his 5 wickets. Schlong de la Jour goes to the skipper for letting some random bloke umpire (to be fair he did nothing untoward) and for his explanation of the shot he got out to. He tried to swat a ball off their spinner that hit off stump over to leg. “I was playing with the spin”..........Yes.....your second ball and yet to get off the mark. Let’s leave it there. On to the delights of Boston Manor Playing Fields next week. Joy!
