Match report The 3s looked to end their losing streak against promotion seeking Osterley at Boddingtons this week. On my way to the ground I experienced two biblical downpours so wasn’t overly optimistic of much play. However Acton was bathed in sunshine by noon and thanks to Charlie getting there early, the covers were removed and the pitch had a good chance to dry. We started 30 minutes late but at least the weather was set fair. Mehaffy won the toss and put them in. Osterley got nearly 350 against us in the corresponding fixture but we felt Bodders would help us restrict them. Piri and the skipper took the new ball and bowled without much luck. Eventually Nathan enticed one of their openers to miscue a drive to Mike at mid on and Sahil came on and bowled their skipper who was seemingly well set. They were about 90 for 4 when we took drinks at 23 overs but they had a partnership that was starting to look dangerous. Their number 6 always seem to get runs against us and we dropped him in an over when he had already smoked 2 6s and a boundary. Both he and the number 5 scored exactly 50 but they kept up a healthy run rate until the end of their innings which ended after 45 overs. Piri and Nathan did a great job picking up wickets at the end with Nathan managing a five for despite having stitches in his bowling hand which was the result of a dropped catch last week! Sorry skip had to mention it! 250 is a good total at Boddingtons but the pitch was drying out and we had 47 overs to get them.

We enjoyed a Karen tea that was well up to her usual standards although the oppo can consider themselves very fortunate in this regard bearing in mind the carb heavy tripe they dished up at their place! Back to the action then as Arkwright and 2 Metre was sent out to get us off to a sprightly start. That is what we got as 11 came off the first over and by the end of the 6th, we had 29 on the board. However Maben Sr nicked off in this over and 3 wickets fell soon after to leave us at 46 for 4. 250 seemed at long way off but JD steadied the ship with Charlie and got the score to 97 before he got castled. Piri then joined Charlie which brought comparisons to Clive Lloyd batting with Gus Logie but soon after he brought up his half century, 2 Metre got stumped to leave us 133 for 6. By now most of the 4th XI had made their way over to lend their support bringing back memories of a fine run chase against these guys 2 years ago when the whole club came over to watch after early finishes. Could the sight of Smithy drinking Kronenberg and Will Yates decked out in Blue Harbours finest casual wear inspire us this time? Well TP came in and soon started to hit the ball with bad intentions. The innings started to pick up momentum, the oppo were not as chirpy. All of a sudden runs were flowing. Piri got out but the score had moved onto 186 and we still had 9 overs to go. Out went Vidal “the Assassin Sasoon” Sasan. The runs kept on coming and a boundary from Sahil meant we needed 23 from 23 balls. Unfortunately Sahil fell the next ball and the skipper joined TP. Nathan went soon after so VC had to try and help TP get us over the finishing line. 18 needed of the last 2 overs and TP launched the next ball onto the District Line. Alas we could only get 1 more run in the rest of the over and 11 were needed off the last. TP got a single off the first ball, VC 2 off the next but then copped one on the knee cap the next ball when doing a Fred Astaire down the pitch. Next ball was gently skewed to mid wicket where a comfortable catch was taken. So we lost by 7 runs against one of the strong promotion contenders. A particularly tough loss on TP who batted out of his skin for his unbeaten 61. Our man of the match.

Another decent performance which we need to build on after a run of 4 defeats where we have mostly played pretty well. We are a bit like the England test team at the moment with the second 5 wickets out scoring the first 5. Good to have batting in depth but the top order need to give us a bit more. I’m sure they will.

Man of the day goes to Scotty Thistlethwaite for getting the covers on Friday night to enable us to get a full game in. Schlong de la Jour also goes to Preston’s own Johnny Bairstow tribute act for suggesting to the 4s that they should stay at the club and watch the inevitable 2s win ( yes it does seem a bit strange saying that) rather than coming over to watch the 3 S heroic defeat!
