Perivale Phoenicians 3 v Actonians Cricket Club 3rd XI on Sat 17 Aug 2019 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost By 83 runs
Match report
So just the 9 changes from the one who lost narrowly at Winchmore Hill last week for the 3s who had their first visit to Ealing Central Sports Ground for a couple of years. Not one of my favourite venues it has to be said but at least the wicket normally plays ok. It did actually look pretty damp at the toss but having won the toss, Perivale decided to bat first.
The acting skipper (I.e. me) decided to open the bowling with Vidal Sasan and the Smithanator. Sahil struck early to get some extra bounce to induce an edge to VC but the other opener took a liking to his bowling by continually smashing him to cow corner. Not ones for the purist to admire but well struck nonetheless. At the other end Smithy kept things pretty tight and he ended up bowling his 12 overs in one spell. He did nab the other opener eventually when Shahid took a good catch at cow and the score at that point was 52 for 2. Their number 4 had an almighty waft at his first ball that almost blew my cap off and after a couple of lusty boundaries he was well caught by Ramesh at gully off Smithy. 70 for 3 off 10 overs so an eventful start to the game. Brad was brought on to do a Jofra and shake things up a bit and he was unlucky not to pick up a wicket or two. What wasn’t unlucky was the 4 buzzers he gave away when his throw was not even in the same post code as the stumps he was aiming at! We managed to peg back the run rate so they were 97 for 3 after 20 but their 4th wicket was developing nicely. I dropped one off Smithy and a good run out opportunity was missed as they took their stand to 101 before their steady number 3 holed out to Roheet at cover off Vidal. Their last 10 overs were also fruitful for Perivale as they scored a further 78 runs to close on 258 in their allotted 45 overs. Sam Worrall picked up a couple of late wickets with his off spin that with a bit of work could prove a handy second string to his bow.
Tea as usual was supplied by the Residents Association who provided a more than adequate offering before we sent out young Harry to open with Sir Geoffrey. They provided a steady start and Harry again looked in good touch before he was run out. The call did look an optimistic one by Geoffrey! Sam looked in good order to before he offered up a caught and bowled to their best bowler but a useful partnership then developed when Shahid came to the crease. At the 20 over mark were not far behind Perivale with the score at 84 but when Geoffrey was bowled by a slower ball, our innings lost impetus and wickets started to fall regularly. When I went out to bat we had subsided somewhat to 141 for 7 but we still had an opportunity to pick up a losing point or two. Unfortunately Shahid developed cramp after scoring a well made 50 and was out soon after. Smithy came in ahead of Roheet on the basis he has more shots! The “dashing” Smithy did hit his first ball for 4 but their spinner deceived him soon after. It was left to the VC to bring a bit more respectability to the score with a cameo that did include a four to cow corner! We were bowled out for 175 with one over remaining.
In the final analysis it was a decent effort by the 3s but the oppo had more firepower in the batting department. Man of the match goes to Shahid for his half century with an honourable mention to Smithy for his spell of dobbing. Schlong de la Jour? Tricky one this week with the usual suspects not playing. We’ll have a rollover to next week when the Big Schlong will be awarded!
