Old Isleworthians III v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 01 Aug 2020 at 12.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 2 Wickets
Match report
The 4s had a trip down memory this week with a game at our old stomping ground in Swyncombe Avenue against Old Isleworthians. Roheet won the toss and invited the oppo to bat on what looked like a decent track. Well compared to Boddingtons anyway!
Their openers were certainly looking to be positive but the skipper soon started to wreak havoc capturing two early weeks thanks to a well taken catch at slip by Malik and and a delivery that broke one of the stumps. So girls, Roheet won’t just break your hearts, he’ll break your stumps too! Billy then used his left breast to good effect holding onto a catch at cover and after two more batsman saw their castles knocked over by the now rampant skipper, Old Is found themselves 30 for 5. Although the skipper picked up all five, Raj at the other end gave nothing away and was unlucky not to pick up a couple himself.
Rob Carrigan and young Charlie Soden then came on and kept it tight with Charlie picking up a wicket for himself. However Old Is then managed to put a couple of decent partnerships together in their attempt to post a challenging total. However Roheet had the spin twins up his sleeve in the shape of Thistlethwaite and Spinks. For those of you not privileged to have seen these guys bowl, what do you get? Well the Preston Murali gives you wides, byes and a few pies..... the Silver Fox gives you some wile, some guile, and the odd one that turns a mile! The former started with 2 less than probing overs but in the 3rd, he took two wickets in two balls. Thankfully the hat trick was averted! The Silver Fox eventually replaced him and soon took the wicket of the number 7 who was starting to hit some lusty blows. Deceived by the flight, the batsman was struck on the foot trying to heave one into next week. To be fair to the number 10 he looked their best player but Rob wrapped up the innings with the score on 155 with over 2 overs left.
Billy opened up with the Fox and with the help of a few extras we got off to decent start. We got the score up to about 30 when Billy’s lead boots enable him to miss a straight one. Malik then came to the crease and a healthy scoring rate was maintained. The Fox departed top edging a pull shot but this brought Bilal Butt to the crease. Bilal then proceeded to anchor the innings and never looked in any real trouble. However we did loose 3 quick wickets when Malik was run out after a mix up, Zain got bowled and Corporal Jones eventually walked after nicking off first ball. Charlie Soden then came in and provided valuable support scoring at a decent lick himself including a maximum over mid wicket. When he got out to a good catch Rob took over and we still had 4 wickets in hand with just 8 runs needed. Rob and the Preston Kohli then got out in the same over and it started to get a bit panicky. Raj did well to hold an end up to enable Bilal to smash the 2 winning boundaries to finish unbeaten on 61.
A good game of cricket then in which we were in control most of the way through but credit to Old Is for battling to the end. Man of the match goes jointly to Bilal and the stump wrecker Roheet. Schlong de la jour also goes to the skipper for keeping a deep midwicket throughout his spell despite this fielder nearly touching the ball amid the carnage of his 5 wicket haul. Mentions in dispatches to Jonesy for his delayed “walk” and the Preston Murali for his nerd like reaction to a no ball given for a bowler kicking the bails off in their follow through. “That’s not a no ball, in fact it’s not a dead ball. It’s just a ball. That rule came in in 2016 but was reversed in 2018............” blah blah blah. If you’re interested ask him about it next time you see him. Alternatively steer well clear of the subject!!
