Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Brentham 4 on Sat 19 Jun 2021 at 12.00pm
Match was Tied
Match report
The miserable weather relented enough for the 4s to take on Brentham at Boddingtons this week. Well done to Roheet and the gang for getting the covers on the night before to ensure we had no issues getting this game played. He lost the toss however and unsurprisingly we were asked to don our pads. We opened with the returning Lord Whear, nursing his muscular issues, and Billy. Quick singles were not on the agenda then! Billy biffed a boundary to the mid wicket boundary before he bunted another straight to a fielder on the leg side to leave us 4 for 1 after the first over. The wicket was very much on the slow side and the outfield was similarly sluggish due to the recent rain. This was never going to be a high scoring game. Their young quick bowler was quite sharp but at least he gave you some pace to play with. After the chairman departed Zain came to join RJ and he looked in great touch with a couple of fine looking cover drives but when he played on we found ourselves 39 for 3. This brought myself in to join the diminutive one. Could our partnership match our combined age (about a ton!)? Well we did ok. In the context of a match that produced 210 runs, putting on 40 for the 4th wicket was riches indeed. RJ smoked the odd boundary on his way to a top score of 38 while I played the “dogs of war” innings required at this point. Brentham’s bowlers gave few bad balls (I think their combined age was even higher!) and RJ having said things like “the job is not yet done”, “let’s not give it away”"……played an ambitious sweep against the spinner who was getting good bounce bowling up the slope. MS Jonesy then came out but the much anticipated nerdlefest was nipped in the bud when he got out in identical fashion to Billy. From 79 for 3 the innings somewhat tailed off as we were all out for 105. Even Aneeq with 8 off 18 balls had difficulty hitting off the square.
Following a very welcome return of the between innings tea, the As took to the field looking for early wickets to give us some hope of getting back into the game. Asad opened up with Raj and while the former struggled with his length, Raj found some movement to trouble their openers. They got off to a decent start before Raj trapped their skipper LBW but when they reached 40 for 1, we were behind the 8 ball. However the skipper was about to play his trump card. The Big Show, Coach, The Special One…….Unique Aneeq was now coming onto bowl off his long run from the sight screen! Carnage ensued as he took 5 wickets to leave them 77 for 7. We were now favourites but their young opening bowler came in and formed a useful alliance with his fellow opening bowler. That said we did drop him early on. Brentham started to edge towards their total when a returning Asad bowled the youngster with a full toss. Much to our surprise the square leg umpire deemed it to be an above wait high no ball. He wasn’t a tall chap but the ball did hit the stumps half way up. Thankfully Roheet nabbed him soon after and the tension was cranked up further when Lord Whear took a great catch a mid on off the skipper to leave them 9 down. 9 runs were still needed as their number 11 came in and started to swat thin air for fun! With 3 needed he managed to connect with one but the Hand of God was not on our side as Padre Billy spilled the chance. Scores were soon level but Asad had the final say when he bowled the number 11 and a tie was secured.
A fair result in the end as we all scratched our heads wondering if we had all been involved in one before. Will have to give man of the match to the Big Show for his five for but it’s only fair he gets Schlong de la Jour too for his strops at the end of their innings!
