Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI v Perivale Phoenicians 4 on Sat 14 Aug 2021 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets
Match report
All sorts of chopping and changing among the teams this week but the main thing as far as I was concerned was that I was not having to undertake a 100 mile round trip to Hackney Marshes! Similarly the likes of Max, Chris and Olly were spared a long car journey with Smithy who would have no doubt been full of it after Brentford’s fine display the previous night. Anyway the much changed 4s were at Boddington this week to take on bottom of the league Perivale Phoenicians who are yet to register anything in the win column. Despite this skipper Gupta invoked the first Smithy rule of captaincy. Win toss and insert.
The new ball was shared by Kabir and the Badger who both proved hard to get away on what was a very slow and low track. Badger picks up “3” in his spell including a run out! Don’t ask…..it’s the rule of Badger….what can I say? The run out was effected by young Chris Moon who is gaining quite a cult following. A new wave of Moonies perhaps? Apart from a few lusty blows to cow corner by their number 4, Perivale’s innings struggled to gain any sort of momentum. Juan Pablo West came on first change and his dobbers were tailor made for this deck. In fact he ended up with 4 wickets including a good grab by Raj in the gulley. Raj himself picked up a couple and the skipper picked up the other one when he came on to bowl a few overs of what I can only describe as “Thistlethwaite’s”! Non turning slow loopy filth that have no place in the game of cricket! Max Worrall had a spell trundling down the hill and the oppo were bowled out eventually for 71 and even on a wicket as slow as this it seemed well under par. A good fielding performance though no doubt helped by a sprinkling of young uns.
After a good tea provided by Badger, we opened up with Billy and Sir Geoff. As we know Geoff likes to book in for bed and breakfast but facing this total it was more a case of booking a room for an hour or two and see how much she charges! Much to his consternation Billy had to run a three early on and this necessitated a tweaking of the cap, fiddling of the gloves followed by a pronounced leave on the next and last ball of the over. That’s what I call experience! Billy did get bowled soon after to one that did keep very low. That said his attempted heave to cow corner was a tad optimistic! Katie then joined Sir Geoff and these took us close to the target before the former was run out by a direct hit going for a tight second run. Chris came in and didn’t take long to see us over the line with some well struck blows. Geoff ended 28 not out from 74 balls and it doesn’t get more Geoffrey than that!
Mathematically the 4s can still go up but it’s very unlikely with 5 teams above them. Next up Brentham away against whom we had a tie in the corresponding fixture.
