Brentham 4 v Actonians Cricket Club 4th XI on Sat 21 Aug 2021 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
This week the 4s found themselves in what was virtually the Maben’s back garden at William Perkins School in Greenford. Brentham were the opponents and in the corresponding fixture the game was tied. On arrival there was a light drizzle and the oppo were under strict instructions from the groundsman not to remove the covers until it stopped raining. Our patience was eventually rewarded with a 2.30 start and a 35 over a side game. Better than a kick in the teeth or indeed as the women of Acton and Ealing would say, better than a bit of slap and tickle with RJ! The team itself was a blend of youth and wily experience. 5 teenagers, 4 players over 49 and 2 who could go on a Club 18-30 holiday. The skipper and Kabir. You probably wouldn’t need to lock up your daughters for those two!
Roheet won the toss and understandably put Brentham into bat. Raj and Kabir shared the new ball and gave very little away. One of their openers was very adept at the nerdle behind square on the leg side but we kept them to 2 an over for the first 10. Kabir struck first trapping their number 2 LBW with a low full toss. Lord Whear then came on and put in a fine display of dobbing. Certainly his approach to the wicket is not a thing of beauty with Mehaffyesque stutters followed by a gather at the wicket resembling a scarecrow with both arms out to the side! It proved effective though as his 4 wicket haul will testify. A few of their batsmen got starts but didn’t go on as the run rate never got above 4 an over on what was a pretty good wicket. The skipper picked up a wicket himself but it was RJs darts that really kept a lid on the scoring in the closing overs. He picked up a couple as Brentham completed their allotted overs on 131 for 8.
Overall we felt it was a job well done but their bowling is stronger than their batting. Archie opened up with Andrew and they were up against a couple of steady seamers who both got the new ball to move around. Andrew fell early bowled when trying an ambitious dab to backward point. RJ soon followed when we’ll caught at deep mid off and it was down to the youngsters to get our reply back on track. Chris Moon and Charlie Soden both played some great shots to put some momentum into our innings and with Archie finding his feet at the other end, we soon found ourselves ahead of the rate. However with Srodders getting a first ball duck we found ourselves 74 for 5 with Brentham sensing their chance. Time for one of the oldish guard to step up in the form of me! Picking up mostly 1s and 2s start with we wrestled the initiative away from the oppo and then Archie, fearing my big hitting might deprive him of a half century, started to find the boundary with increasing regularity. He duly brought up his first adult 50 and I’m sure this will provide the springboard for many more. In the end we reached our total with nearly nine overs to spare after a partnership worth 60.
A very satisfying win with good contributions all round especially from the young brigade. Archie picks up the man of the match gong this week with Schlong de la Jour going to MS Jonesy. He didn’t play because he was dog sitting. Need I say more? Aneeq is back this week so no doubt he will find a way to reclaim the “crown”!
