Brondesbury 5 v Actonians Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 10 Jul 2021 at 12.30pm
Actonians Cricket Club Won By 3 Wickets
Match report
The bottom division served up a real treat for the 5s this week as we were away to league leaders Brondesbury at Hampstead Heath Extension. Facilities were somewhat lacking so we can all now say we’ve had our Hampton out on Hampstead Heath! Well everyone except Katie of course! As it turned out we should not have been playing there. Hampstead 5s turned up after the match started claiming they had booked the pitch. They were right so Brondesbury asked them to go to the ground we should have used.
Anyway on to the game. The pitch was very grassy and there were little indication that a roller had been used to prepare it. The Preston Brearley wisely opted to bowl first. Their openers were an interesting combination. A second team bowler who wasn’t fit but could strike a ball very cleanly, and a 13 year old who was technically very sound. Adam “Biggles” Trainor shared the new ball with Smithy. Adam seemed to bowl mostly at the senior player and he was eventually rewarded for a good spell when he held on to a fine return catch that the skipper at mid off didn’t look too interested in! The Badger replaced Smithy and he soon removed their number 3 in a handy spell of 1 for 6 off 5 overs. Normally you have expected him to have bowled more overs in such a miserly mode but unfortunately he returned late back from the drinks break. Basically he left his drink in Bobby’s car, got the keys but could not remember were he had parked. As a result the skipper decided to turn his arm. Result? Carnage for the league leaders! His first over went for just a single so a la Mehaffy he decided to have another one. Next over resulted in 3 wickets. There was no coming off now as the Preston Murali proceeded to take four more to complete a lifetime best return of 7 for 34. He was ably supported in particular by Mohsen at cow corner who took three good catches. At the other end Padre Billy kept it tight and 1 wicket seemed scant reward. That’s cricket for you….. Brondesbury all out for 113 in 38 overs but we sensed the run chase was going to be far from straightforward on this strip.
Katie and Bobby opened up for us and had to face two good young bowlers. One in particular bowled a very consistent and challenging line and the openers did well to see him off after he bowled his maximum 5 over spell. However Bobby gloved the spinner who replaced him to the keeper which brought TP in. After a few blocks he launched a mighty six and soon Katie started to find some gaps to get her score going. As we approached the half way point Brondesbury decided to bring on their “injured” bowler. He was appreciably quicker than anything else we have faced this season and we were going to have work hard to claim the victory. Katie gave a return catch to the returning opening bowler and Mohsen battled hard before offering a simple catch off their skipper. TP nicked off to the quick and when I went in we were still 34 runs shy with 6 wickets in hand. On a green pitch on Hampstead Heath Extension not a forgone conclusion. Srodders looked in good touch until he succumbed with a less than elegant swipe and Padre Billy was beaten for pace by the quick. Next up the Badger. Luckily he remembered where the wicket was and with over 20 still needed we managed to score 11 runs off their skipper bowling off breaks round the wicket. The quick removed him soon after but this only brought in “Biggles”. Adam did very well to keep out the quick and with 6 runs required their spinner at the other end kindly served up a couple of pies to enable me to finish the game.
So a second win in succession for the 5s and against the top side to boot. Man of the match clearly has to go to the Preston Murali who in taking 7 wickets managed to spill 2 caught and bowled chances! A day he’ll probably never forget. Schlong de la Jour has to be the Badger again for his disappearing act at the drinks break. That said it probably won us the game so a Schlong to savour! Somewhat apt for Hampstead Heath………………
