Winchmore Hill 5 v Actonians Cricket Club 5th XI on Sat 31 Jul 2021 at 12.30pm
Match was Abandoned

Match report After 3 wins in 4 games the 5s found themselves back at the Paulin Ground where we secured our first win of the season against Winchmore Hill 6s. This time we were up against their 5s who are in the promotion picture. With a dubious weather forecast it was not a big shock to be asked to bat first by their skipper. The returning Billy, trying to shake off his reputation as the breezy cameo king, opened up with Bobby. They faced a father/ son opening combo. Dad started with a full pie that Billy “tucked” into but he soon settled down and proved difficult to get away (well until the last over but more on that later). Junior had a difficult opening over as we raced to 24 after 2 overs but he too improved. Bobby failed to take advantage of getting dropped at cover by offering the same fielder an easier chance shortly after. Mohsen joined Billy and looked in decent touch but kept finding a fielder when showing any sign of aggression. Billy shocked us all with a boundary off the back foot through the covers before he too failed to make the most of a missed opportunity by the Hill. He spliced one straight in the air towards the slip cordon and they watched each other as it dropped to the ground. Again, a la Bobby, he tried a similar shot and this time gave mid on catching practise. Still a decent platform had been built. Last weeks hero Chris Moon came out to join the Persian Bradman and he again looked in good nick. However both fell in fairly quick succession but Malik was having one of those days when the ball mostly made contact with the middle of his bat. In at 6 I was happy to play 2nd fiddle as he powered his way to 48 which gave our innings real impetus. This brought in young Max Worrall for his first dig as a 5th team player. He looked assured from the start as we added 30 runs in quick time. With the score on 181 for 5 after 36 overs a message was sent out. The Preston Brearley was looking at a declaration in 2 overs time. Overs had been losses due to a rain delay so the match was now scheduled to be a maximum of 80. By now the senior opening bowler was back on and the skippers message had a sort of “fix bayonets over the top” like effect on me. Time for beast mode. Result? Here’s what happened to the next 3 deliveries:

Ball 1- above waist no ball thumped over square leg for 6.
Ball 2- lower full toss (but legal) thumped over square leg for 6.
Ball 3- length ball, front leg cleared, biff over long on for 6.

To be honest I cannot recall much about the rest of the over but Thistlethwaite waved us off, the 5s had reached 200 and we were giving the Hill, in theory, 42 overs. Bold indeed by the Ginger Collosus. As I walked off my team mates just stared at me. Was it in awe……or were they in shock? Bit of both probably!

Azeem took the new ball with Kabir. Not seen Azeem for a few years, we’ll certainly not since Piri claimed he kept c*** blocking him on holiday! Azeem is sporting a hair do now that could go full de Grandhomme soon if he doesn’t get to a barber! Only 4.2 overs were possible as the Hill reached 9 for 1 before the rain caused an abandonment. A shame because the game was set up nicely with the oppo sure to have a real go.

No man of the match or Schlong de la Jour this week as game not completed. However the day did provide a lasting memory for myself who will no doubt happily bore the pants off anyone who feels the need to hear more about those 3 maximums. The day was somewhat tarnished back at the club by RJ who planted a kiss on my cheek. Not my idea of social distancing! Finally a quick question. Go back to the start of the season and think about which of these things were least likely to occur:

1/ A Thistlethwaite seven for.
2/ Silver Fox 3 x 6s in 3 balls.
3/ Marcus coming back from a lads holiday and failing to add a notch to his bedpost.
