Actonians Cricket Club Womens 1st XI v Ickenham CC Ladies on Sun 02 May 2021 at 2.00pm
Actonians Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
The start of May did not see the start of the much-anticipated warmer weather this weekend, but it did see the first of our T20 double headers. Our first match was not as scheduled (unfortunately HWP conceded), but instead we played a rather wonderful development T20 with our junior counterparts at Boddington. The first of many we hope! It also got us nicely warmed up for our afternoon return clash vs. Ickenham in the T20 Derick Morgan League, back over at HQ for the first time this season. Katie won the toss and chose to field. The team had some wise words from skipper Katie, with lots of talk about trying to take those catches close to you, stopping singles in the ring, and stopping 4s if you’re on the boundary.
Zara took the new ball, playing her first game for Actonians since 2017. Early on, the Katies were glad Keely made them extend the boundary, as the Ickenham Opener meant business, appreciating the pace onto the bat and hitting a few confident boundaries in the first couple of overs! Zara and Gio were not deterred though and bowled well, with lots of dot balls in their opening spell - despite a few misfields and a difficult dropped catch from Ms. Safe-hands the skipper herself! On came Sarah, who bowled to her field and this time Katie made no mistake in taking an excellent catch in the covers. Sarah and Riya bowled very tightly, with young Riya bowling the only maiden over of the game. On came Katy O and Amy, who carried on the trend, and with two less experienced batters now at the crease, mistakes were inevitable. In Zara’s words, the Katies then tried to fill up the scorebook as much as possible, Katie D taking a great run out, Katy O doing her best Nathan Lyon impression to fumble another, before throwing in a 2nd successful attempt to Riya at the stumps. Katy O then finished her 3rd over by clean bowling the number 3 batter. In came the experienced Hannah Stobbs to help jog the Ickenham innings along a bit, and the experience of Aishah & Mads to try and restrict her scoring opportunities, followed by second spells by Gio and Ria. Aishah clean bowled the no.6 batter for a duck, but unfortunately Stobbs and the incoming no. 7 bat took off with the help of some slack fielding pretty much all-round – giving us lots to work on in our next training session with Mikey!
Actonians were chasing 105, which looked achievable on a batting pitch. But our main goal was to develop in the areas we set out to before the game. Sarah and Aishah opened, but unfortunately Aishah didn’t get much developing time as she was run out early on for the second time in two games, having played 2 lovely 4s and scoring 10. Sarah showed composure as our experienced anchor, and helped the incoming Emily navigate her innings, scoring her highest score in recent times including a lovely 4 herself. Although she didn’t get to bat with Emily as planned (probably for the best), Sally then occupied the crease for a good length of time with Sarah and then Mads, before being given out LBW. Mads played an extremely confident innings, scoring her highest ever score (18*) and helping Sally and Gio at the other end, before being joined by her Newcastle Uni pal Katie to finish off the innings on 87.
Well done to Mads and Riya as joint girls of the game!
So we fell short of the runs, but we were not short of team spirit. We know what we need to work on over the next few weeks, but we played another great game against our friends at Ickenham and achieved many of our personal development goals for the game. Cricket was the winner today!!
